Marion vs. nn Mari (Mah-ree)

I would like to name my daughter Marion (after MIL) and call her Mari (pronounced Mah-ree). Is this too different from Marion to be used interchangeably? I don’t care for Mary quite as much. Thoughts? Thanks!

i think you’d be better just naming her Mari, because the sounds are too different, unless your MIL pronounces her name mah-ree-on? Mari will still honour her, without her having the exact same given name. how about
