What vs. are your vs. thoughts?

What are your thoughts on using traditionally male names that have gone over to the girl side on boys? I’m talking about Harper, Kendall, Piper, Peyton, Addison, Sutton, Bellamy, and so on. Are they too far on the other side to be used on boys anymore? Or will they cause a lot of problems for a boy(teasing, people expecting a girl, etc.)? My husband and I have been considering some of these names for our son(our first child) and we have gotten response saying that it would be a horrible choice to use any of these names on a boy, considering their popularity for girls these days. What do you think?

I would say that once a name is used more than 50% of the time for girls, I’d stop using it. I’m not sure quite how to find the statistics on that though. I would suggest that you give him a clearly male, nice-sounding middle name, in case the teasing became a problem and he wanted to go by his middle name instead. No, I don’t think using these on a boy is "horrible" and especially if it’s a family name or to honor someone, then you definitely have a case for using it.

It depends. I’d like to name a boy Avery, if I have one. But Ashley, Lauren, Madison, Ainsley, Chelsea... I’d cut it at this point.

I prefer Kendall and Peyton for a boy.

Harper and Addison have for decades been used as a girl name.

I think it’s probably harder and harder to try and name boys these days because it seems like every name for boys is starting to show up on girls. These parents probably are doing it because:
1. They really wanted a boy and this is a way to compensate
2. They want her to appear "strong" as a gender equality thing
3. They don’t want men finding her attractive. But then when she’s 35 and her parents are asking her when she’s going to get married and gave grandkids, she’ll probably say something like, "Well, mom and dad. No man wants to date a woman named Bennett."

We understand that poster 5, hence the question. The names are male in origin, being surnames. Therefore we are wondering if it’s such a bad idea to use any of the names on a boy even when the origin is taken into consideration.

I think you should ask around and see if people around you would name some of the names you are thinking of on boys.
I think once a name is introduced in the entertainment culture for a girl, I think it will mostly have a female connotation.

Names I would consider for girls now: Harper, Piper, Addison
Names I would consider to be a mix of both: Kendall, Peyton, Sutton, Bellamy

Well I think each one is different.

Harper - It’s far too masculine to use on a girl. But since it is VERY overused on girls, I would not think of it as a guy either. I dislike this name anyway.
Kendall - It is very girly, but I actually prefer it on a boy.
Piper - I don’t think this is a boy’s name at all. It’s kinda cute on a girl though. Kinda. I’d get really tired of it.
Peyton - I love this name on a boy and really dislike it on a girl. But it is commonly used on girls.
Addison - I really like this name on both.
Sutton - I think this one could go either way. I like it a lot.
Bellamy - Same thing, I think it could go either way. I like both.
