Unusual Girl Names vs. Like Nightingale?

We are having a little girl! She is our first child and we want her to have an unusual name. We saw Nightingale on a different poll not too many below ours and pretty much fell in love with it. But we would love to get some other name ideas that are like that one! Her middle name will be Opal-Claire after my mom(Claire) and my husband’s grandmother(Opal). Nightingale Opal-Claire is a very pretty combo to us! But could you please suggest some other unusual girl names like Nightingale to go with middle name Opal-Claire? Nothing like a normal name spelled weirdly though. Thanks! ~Heather

It’s too much. I get it as a middle name, especially if it’s a family name or your maiden name, but as a first name is just way too out there.

Do you want the name to be nature-themed or just slightly different than Sarah and Lucy?

Opal is pretty unusual in itself... Why don’t you do Opal Claire? Nightingale is weird, I don’t think she’d appreciate having this name when she gets older.

Nightingale is fine as a nickname. The middle name works. A more normal first name will be better for her. It needs to be a name that will age well.

What would you think if you received a resume with with the first name Nightingale at the top? Unfortunately, the business world can be cruel.

What about Gail? Or Gale? It’s part of Nightingale, but it would certainly help with her professional life. Or maybe Gail-Claire Opal?

oops. Posted before I finished. I was going to suggest Gail-Claire Opal and call her "our little nightingale" as a nickname, kind of like a play-on word with Gail.

We like weird. Plus we wanted her to have her own first name. Opal is her great grandmother’s first name. You never know if a kid is going to like their name so you can’t say that she won’t like it. Also, is Nightingale any worse than Paisley or any other name that people still use even though they are names that "won’t age well"? She is our daughter, if we want to use a "weird" name like Nightingale we will, we only asked flr other suggestions, if you are just going to give us a lecture then please don’t bother. Thank you for voicing your concerns though.

We like Amity, Thessaly, Maven, Soraya, Paloma(Paloma Opal-Claire actually sounds very nice too!), Camellia, Delphine, Wisteria, Juniper, and Vespar! Thanks! ~Heather

I worked as a high school teacher for a stint. You’re right, some kids with unique names loved and embraced them, but the vast majority found a nickname like Sam or Annie or something that could somewhat feasibly come from their given name because they really didn’t want to go by that unique name. I know there are tons of names being used right now that won’t age well. Tons. And obviously parents will choose what they want. But...I think there’s a bit of a difference when the name is a word, especially a word that’s used in modern English.

Oh lordy, Nightingale is just not good. You may like weird, yes, but this is just too out there.

From the other names you listed that you like, I think Maven Opal-Claire sounds kind of spunky without being too weird. Carlin, Amberly and Lysandra would work with your middle name choice too. I also like the pp suggestion of Gale-Claire Opal.

Well, my favorite name that’s a little out-there is Amaryllis (like the flower). I have never heard anyone with the name, but I think it’s beautiful. Maybe you’ll like it too. There are lots of different nickname options for it if you want to use one.

btw did you know that the nightingale is also a percussion/novelty instrument? It’s like a tiny tin can of water that you blow into and it makes a fluttery, chirpy sound. (My grandmother was a percussionist and that was one of our favorite toys when visiting her.) While I’d never choose Nightingale myself, I think it’s a lot prettier than Wren, which is apparently becoming popular.

It’s nice but I don’t think it will work for long. It is Very original.
Opal-Claire is very pretty though! Why not for the first name... or even Claire Opal?
Otherwise I would suggest Bellatrix, Ethelwynn, and Lilybelle.
Good Luck, hope this helps.
