? vs. ? vs. ?

Hi, my husband and I have been together for 5 years. We both have 2 children from a previous marriage. We’ve been trying and trying with no luck. Just last month we found out we were finally expecting. And to out surprise it’s not just one blessing but we have two coming. We do not know the gender yet. But do know they are identical and most identical twins are the same gender. So could you please help us with a few names. Don’t have to start with the same letter or sound alike. -we already have Blaire (13) Gwen (12) Dylan (10) Laydon (8)

Identical twins are almost always the same sex, but surprisingly there are a tiny number of boy-girl monozygotic twins. They result from an egg that contains an unusual mixture of sex chromosomes, not the usual XX for a girl, and XY for a boy. Occasionally an egg contains three sex chromes, two X’s and a Y. But if the egg divides to produce monozygotic twins, a chromosome may be lost in the process, leaving one embryo with a girl’s XX combination, and her monozygotic twin as an XY boy.

Just some information. But yes they are almost always the same gender.

I’m really curious why you think it’s possible for identical twins to not be the same gender? Identical twins are identical because the original fertilized egg duplicated. Before that happened, gender was already established. So either the female egg duplicated and made another female egg, or the male egg duplicated and made another male egg. I don’t mean to cause a problem or question ypu.. I’m actually just wondering if you know something I don’t.

But that’s not the point of this. Name suggestions:
Alena & Mahri
Natalie & Julia
Mae & Lynn (Love these two. Nice and simple, and uncommon simply because most people use them as middle names)
Aya & Carin
Sairen & Salena

Dax & Paolo
Hawke & Rhys
Soloman & Silas

All identical twins are the same gender, they have the same exact genes, so they both have XX or XY. They might look the same, but if you have boy/girl twins they would be fraternal. The egg gives the first X chromosome and the sperm either gives the other X or the Y, then the egg splits if the sperm gave a Y, you’ll have two baby boys, if the sperm gave an X, you’ll have two baby girls! Now after this biology lessen, lol, I’ll suggest names.

There is one extremely rare exception to identical twins being the same gender. There have been less then 10 cases. In these cases, the female always has Turner’s Syndrome. Again, this is INCREDIBLY rare.

after looking it up, yes if there is an extra strand of DNA, yes boy girl twins can come from one egg, but they wouldn’t be identical twins. Identical twins have the EXACT same DNA. The girl would have XX and the boy would have XY. My mom and her fraternal twin sister look almost the exact same, but that doesn’t change the fact that they have different DNA. They a fraternal, but look a like. So yes, in some rare cases they could come from the same fertilized egg, but NO they will not be identical.

I am a geneticist and identical twins are ALWAYS identical. They come from the same cell (already identified with a gender) split in two. Identical means they are physically the same. Just so you are aware, boys and girls are not physically the same therefore, cannot be identical.

Can Boy Girl Twins Be Identical?

The short answer is No! The terms identical and fraternal don’t describe what the twins look like, but actually how they form. Identical (monozygotic) twins are always of the same sex because they form from a single zygote that contains either male (XY) or female (XX) sex chromosomes. Therefore, boy/girl twins are always fraternal or (dizygotic); they can only form from two separate eggs that are fertilized by two separate sperm.

I think that people are just trying to help you in the naming process. You only need to worry about gg or bb. that should make it easier.

Right! And all I said.... Again... Was that we know they are identical and most identical twins are the same gender. Maybe I should’ve worded it differently???? Didn’t think people would take it that badly??

I think it’s how you worded it, it sounds like you don’t know identical twins are the same gender in the original post. The word ’most’ is what throws it off. Good luck and congrats.
