Eleanora Beatrice vs. Lillian Poppy vs. Madelyn Gray

Thank you. These names go in very different directions, some classic and some more modern. Our biggest worry is nicknames. I dislike nicknames in general and really dislike Ellie, Lilly, and Maddie, but we love the full names. This is our first child. Is it easy to avoid nicknames? Or do they naturally happen against your control? Thank you, Kat

I think you’d have the best chance of avoiding them with Lillian. Sometimes nicknames stick and sometimes they don’t, it’s really hard to predict. At first I hesitated to use the name Nathan because I hated Nate, but I finally decided I could live with it if that’s what he wanted. He’s three, and although a couple people at church do call him Nate, he goes by the full Nathan for now.

The longer the name the more likely a nickname is.

My name is Stephanie and my mom despises the nickname Steph. Naturally, I like it better. It should be up to your child and no matter how much you fight it, nicknames are easier for people and they will use it whether you want them to or not.

If my daughter wants the nicknames, then of course!!! But not if others impose it on her.

If you don’t want to just automatically give her a nickname then that’s perfectly fine. But usually having a longer name makes kids want to have a shorter version to go by. My son is named Matthias and he recently started telling his teacher, friends, and family to call him Matt. So giving her any one of these names is likely going to make the nicknames unavoidable. With Eleanora, she could decide to go by Nora instead of Ellie though. Lilly and Maddie are pretty much the only nicknames she would get out of Lillian and Madelyn.

If you are trying to avoid nicknames, Lillian isn’t the best option at all. Especially with all of the other Lillians that go by Lily. Her teachers and friends will automatically think she goes by Lily as well. Same with Madelyn and Maddie. Eleanora is your best bet but Eleanora Poppy would flow better than Eleanora Beatrice.

Longer names usually do cause people to find shorter versions. Eleanora would have a much bigger variety of nicknames for her to choose from besides just Ellie where Lillian would alwas automatically be Lilly and Madelyn would automatically be Maddie. A girl named Eleanora could be called Nora, Lea, Elle, Norie, or maybe even Ellen. So I would go with Eleanora.

Lilian Poppy gmv, though something like Beatrix Poppy would be cute!

In a way nicknames are kind of inevitable - especially as most kids go through a phase where they and all their friends want special little nicknames. However if you consistently use her full name and make sure its always put down on nametags and roll call etc as the full name, she’s less likely to have like an "official" nickname which literally everyone even her teachers know her by.

Eg I get called Elle a hell of a lot, and often its written down casually in emails etc - but ultimately everyone knows what my full name is, and I do get called by that more often
