Jorah vs. Jorah nn Jory vs. Other uncommon J name

Yes I know it’s in Game of Thrones/ Song of Ice and Fire and no that is not where we got it from. We don’t mind the connection though. It is a real name from centuries ago from many different origins. It means early or first rain and teacher. We want to use it for our son due this winter. What do you think? We agreed on using a J name to uphold family tradition but are verrrry picky since most J names have been used already. If you have suggestions, no common, trendy,or popular names like James, Justin, Julian, Jonah, Jace, etc. It would have to be as unheard of as Jorah. So yay or nay?

I like Jorah a lot. There is also a Game of Thrones character named Jory so with that nickname there is twice the association but I don’t see any reason for that to be a problem.

You might like Jethro, Jericho, Josiah, Jacoby or Jude?

Jorah or okay, never been a huge fan of it even before the Game of Thrones and Jory seems girly and too feminine. I know a teenage boy name Janzen. That’s the first time I’ve never heard that one before him and he’s the only one I’ve seen it on since. Or there is Jai(jy), Jamin/Jaimen(jay-men), Jethro, Joben, Jarek/Jarick, Jerome, Jarvis, Jedidiah, Jerard, or Jericho.

I have always loved Judah nn Jude which eventually led us to Jorah because Judah/Jude is too popular for our liking. Jethro was a contender until my brothers’ said Jethro reminded them of deathrow so that has been out lol I do like Josiah but I know one or two so I can’t picture actually using it.

The only other names we were considering were Joachim or Joaquin but we couldn’t agree on which one and Jupiter but it might be too out there.

As for Jorah we were thinking Jorah Leonardo after his dad, Jorah Constantine after me, or Jorah Galileo because we like it, if that helps any.

I do like Jerard but is this spelling made up? I’ve only ever seen it as Gerard.. The rest just aren’t my style, sorry! Thanks for your suggestions!

I really like it a lot! Much more than the super common Jonah. I’ve also heard of the name Joren which is pretty similar and apparently originated in Greece. I also like Joaquin and Joachim. And if you lie those J names that start with different sounds, then you might also consider Javier or Johan. Good luck :)

Judah isn’t really common. I only know 1 boy named Jude. But none named Judah. If you like Judah, Judas is also a nice name. Jericho is also a very nice name. As is Jerome. I’ve never even heard of anyone considering either Jerome or Jericho. Jerome Leonardo or Jericho Galileo would make lovely full names. Judas Leonardo or Judas Galileo would be cool. Not a fan of Jorah. It’s kinda sounds more feminine because it sounds so similar to the girl names Cora, Laura/Lora, Maura, Dora, and Nora. Jory is also a little more feminine to me.

Jerard is a correct spelling. It is a French name and that is the correct spelling. Gerard is English, Jerard is French. I like Jerard way better than Jorah. Mainly because I can’t see Jorah as anything but a misspelling of Jonah, sorry. It also does sound a bit too feminine as the comment above me said.

I really like Jorah! It’s cool and definitely unique. Also Jory is a fun nickname. I say stick with Jorah!
If the J name tradition is on your husband’s side, name him Jorah Constantine, and if it’s on your side name him Jorah Leonardo. Just because I think it would be nice if he had a family name/tradition from both sides. Jorah Galileo is cool, but I think it’s too names that are a bit too out there when put together.

Great choices though!

Joren is really handsome and will definitely be considered next to Jorah. Thank you!

When I searched up the name Judah and Jude for my state on the ss database, they were both in the top 50 which is wayyy too common. That’s why we nixed it. We considered Judas but didn’t want to bestow such a controversial biblical name on him either.

Idk about Jericho. It may grow on me but I really would despise the nn Jerry. Rick or Rico would be okay. It’s just that possible Jerry that makes me iffy.

I don’t think Jorah sounds ’feminine’ and even if it did I don’t think it’s a bit deal. I do like Joren too, there’s also Jojen (Joe-jhn). Jojen is a Game of Thrones name too, but I don’t think it really matters.

Excellent! I love the french Jerard too than. Do you think Jerard could become Jerry for short too though? :/ it would be so much easier if nicknames weren’t an issue!

For now I’ll be bringing Joren and Jerard up to his dad to see if he likes them too. If we stick with Jorah, his full name will be Jorah Leonardo (the J theme is from my side for all first born men). Thanks for bringing some balance! You made ne realize I was being a smidge name greedy.

Jojen is quite different! I must admit that. I do like it but not sure if people will really try to lynch us over it....lol Thank you!

I don’t find Jorah so feminine either as I find it so close to Jonah and Judah but I’m okay with it considering the naming trends these days don’t care for masculine or feminine stereotypes. I’m just surprised it’s viewed as it is!

I love Jorah. The only other other name I can think to suggest that doesn’t seemt have been listed already is Jared.

Oh I love Jarett/Jared. Thanks!

Between Jorah, Joren, Jojen, Jarett, Jared, Jupiter, and Jerard. My personal top 3 would be Jorah, Jerard, and Jupiter although Jojen and Jarett are starting to stick.
