Why would you steer clear of Atticus? It’s 350th right now so not super popular, it is still on the rise but I think not worth worrying about popularity.
As for racist connotations, in the new book it’s not great but in To Kill A Mockingbird he is the hero - standing up for the rights of others, how could that be bad?

I think Atticus is a fantastic literary name and it’s not common, but it is on the rise (slowly). I don’t see absolutely anything wrong with it.
