Honoring vs. Margaret

We both had great grandmothers named Margaret, we were originally planning on using in as a middle but now we’re strongly considering using it as a first name. What is your favorite nicknames or not so common nicknames you’d use? Another variation we have to consider? Should we use it as a middle and give her her own first name?

If you both love the name Margaret, I would advise you to choose it.

Naming your daughter after important women on both sides of the family would hold great meaning. It would forever connect her to the past and her heritage.

I’ve really come to love Margaret. I used to overlook it. But it’s got a neat feature; it makes me think of a grand, strong lady at the same time as the girl-next-door. That’s rare. Plus, it’s got endless nickname possibilities: Meg, Maggie, Mae, Peg, Peggy, Maisie, Daisy Greta, Rita, and Pearl. My favorites are Meg and Peggy.

Variants are wonderful. But Margaret is lovely as is and it’s the most direct way to honor both of your great-grandmothers. It will be the most meaningful for your daughter. Good luck! :0)

If you love it, you should use it. My favorite nickname for Margaret is definitely Etta! I also like Maisie, Mae, Margot, and Greta. I’m also really liking Marit and Maret which are nicknames for Margaret in some Scandinavian countries.
My least favorite nickname for it is Mamie...it just sounds unattractive and sort of like someone with a heavy accent trying to say a cross between Ma’am and Mommy.
