dont change Oleksandra vs. change to Alexandra/ Aleksandra vs. or keep as middle name

Hi there! we’re adopting a 3 year old girl from Ukraine. Her name is Oleksandra. We are debating how/if we should change her name. Should we maybe change the spelling to the very similar pronunciation of Alexandra, or maybe even Aleksandra? Should we make it her middle name? (We like Lily Oleksandra but open to suggestions). should we not change it at all? wdyt??

My vote is either change it to Alexandra, or I prefer Alexandria. Or go with Lily Oleksandra

If she’s already three years old, don’t change it. She already knows her name.

I personally think changing it to Alexandra would be fine - you are simply anglicizing the name. I wouldn’t change her name beyond that though because she is three and already knows her name. Congrats!

At three, since she probably can’t write her name, this is a good time to change the spelling. You have to change alphabets anyway. Most who would hear her name would automatically think that it’s spelled "Alexandra". I’d go for it. It will also help to make the transition a little easier.

As for Lily Alexandra - which I think is gorgeous - I’d ask her.

I would change the spelling to Alexandra. That way she can technically keep her name, and since she’s three I’m guessing she doesn’t know the current spelling. Alexandra is lovely, good luck!

Oleksandra and Alexandra are pronunced completely differently! If you absolutely need to change it, I’d say change it to Aleksandra. Unlike Alexandra, which is pronunced al-ex-ANN-drah, Oleksandra and Aleksandra are both pronounced more like ahl-ek-SAHN-drah. Aleksandra looks a bit more Western-friendly.
