Trooper vs. Scout vs. Rumour

Ryder, Archer, Hunter. Does anyone else find these names really weird on kids that don’t grow up out on a farm (where they could actually be a hunter or archer)?

Some are really bad, like Trooper, Hunter, Rumour, and I don’t like Ryder/Rider because it could be turned into something dirty. I love Archer. I think they’re best on children who don’t actually participate in these activities because then it’s really tacky. I would name my child Archer. Scout is alright but I think it’s more of a nickname. Also, kids who grow up on "farms" aren’t typically hunters and archers.

Is this like saying, you can’t name your child Jet unless he’s dark skinned or aspiring to actually be a jet?

I didn’t say that all kids who live on farms (meaning out in the country on a farm, whether working or not) are hunters...but its more likely than a city kid. I mean, I hate walking into classrooms and having, say, an Archer and a Hunter and the kids as ’hey Archer/Hunter, can you shoot an arrow/actually hunt?’ and he has to say ’no, my parents just thought it would be cute’ and then he gets made fun of.
Also, Jet is a terrible name, but I don’t know why he’d have to be dark-skinned...?

As in, "Jet Black."

Why would you name your kid after a hobby or job? I wouldn’t name my daughter "Record Keeper" or "Artist." So you’d rather name a child (and know already what he’ll like before he’s born) after something that they’ll do?

I think you’re missing the point...didn’t he say he wouldn’t do that either?
Anyway, I wouldn’t name any kid Trooper or Rumour. So ugly! I’d stick to normal names. Like John and Harry.

hahaha. You just proved my point. Thank-you :). I wouldn’t name a kid ’Artist’ either, which is why I think these are bad names.
However, if someone gave the name Artist to their kid, wouldn’t you much rather have it on someone who knows how or at least likes to paint/draw etc?

No, because that’s naming your child so that they’ll do something. If I met a kid named Artist who was an Artist, I’d think that was utterly ridiculous. Naming your child Archer and having him be a hunter or bowman is equally as dumb. You can’t name your child with expectations. If I met a Hunter, I would assume that he didn’t know how to hunt and that his parents don’t either. Why would you even assume that?

Plus, Rumour isn’t a word and it definitely isn’t a hobby or job, so why would that have something to do with it? What would you expect from them? That they spread rumors?

I don’t like words as names but many names are from jobs. Just as Taylor/Tailor, Mason, Porter, Carter, Chandler, Clark, Dean, Foster, George, Marshall, Piper, Spencer, Stewart, Travis, Tyler, Wayne, Wright, etc. I would say that some, if not most, would be considered "traditional" and classic.

I think all those kids of names are just really bad. Tacky and trendy and will soon be dated. I would stick with something more classic....Original names are great, but with names liket hat the kid is going to be made fun of and hate it’s name.
