Maya Pronunciation vs. Please vs. Help!

How do you pronounce the name Maya??? Like My-ah. or like May-ah, like this is MY house, or I May come later?. The month or the personalization of ownership. I love the name Mya pronounced this way My-a, but my son has a 4 letter name and I think that I like the splling Maya better if it is pronounced MY-AH. Please help me with the pronunciation when Mya is spelt Maya. Thanks so much :)

Spell it Myah. I think that is adorable.

I never use the pronunciation May-ah. I say either My-ah or Mee-yah. I think My-ah would be good for Maya, but I love Miya (pro. Mee-yah). I actually like Miya more. Do you? Let me know!

Maya ia actally pronounced May-ah. there’s the A between the M and Y. Miya/Mya/Maia(ai make the eye sound) are pronounced My-ah. GL!

Oh, and Mee-ah is spelled Mia. I’ve looked these names up on many other sites before, and these were the pronounciations. GL!

Pretty Sure its My-ah. And Ryan Gal. Miya and Mya are NOT the same name. Mya is MY-AH, Miya is the same as Mia (my 5 month old’s name) pronounced MEE-AH. So mya and Miay are not the same. one is MY-a and one is MEE-a. like Mya and Mia. Hope it helps!

Thanks Kirsten. And yes I do like it. The two names on the top of my list right now are Mya and Mia. But as I said I want a four letter name cause my sons name is 4 letter, so Maya (as being discussed) and Miya- thanks for the suggestion of alternate spelling to make it 4 letters. For mia (MEE-AH) do you think Miya or Meya is better for that pronunciation? Thanks muchly!

I know 2 Maya’s and both pronounce their name My-ah, not May-ah. I’ve never heard it said that way.

I like Maya best, then Miya. I don’t like it spelled Meya - looks like Me-uh or Meh-uh.

No problem! I actually think both of them might be pronounced as My-ah. What about...Miia? I think it’s actually beautiful, and has a funky look to it! Or maybe Miah? I personally like Mia, but that isn’t four letters...I think Miia is nice! What do you think- if you like that, maybe I can give you middle names. Let me know!

Its My-ah. I have never heard it said any other way than that. I love it spelled Maya :)

I have ALWAYS heard it pronounced it MY-ah. You should keep the spelling Maya. Other spellings will just be confusing. MY-ah and MAY-ah are both accurate pronunciations but MAY-ah is a lot less common. Despite what a pp said, MY-ah is a correct pronunciation of it, particularly in Spanish and other like languages.

Both me & my ex named a baby girl *MAYA* in *1995* not myur or any other similar pronunciation, she hates being called Miyer Myur or anything similar, it’s spelt MAYA & sounds beautiful as it is. Just ask a girl of age called MAYA spelt like that, & see what she says. That’s all I can say... Hope that helps.

My name is pronounced May-ah (like the month) and although I may be biased I definitely prefer it to Myah. Lots of people do pronounce it wrong and I have to correct them but that happens the other way around too (I know someone who uses Myah pronunciation)

Maya is pronounced MAY-AH like Mayonaise won’t be Myonaise... There’s an A between the M & Y for a reason! Has anyone heard of a silent A???? Jeez
posted by Miri :: 9 years ago | report
Yep. Understand that the pronounciation is My-ah (with a silent A). As found in the word Mayans.

It’s not a name of English origin so doesnt follow English language rules:

To help you get started with Mayan, we thought we’d offer this beginner’s guide on how the language works.

Conveniently enough, the vowel sounds in Maya are the same as in Spanish:

“A” sounds like the “a” in father.
“E” sounds like the “ay” in way.
“I” sounds like the “ee” in feet.
“O” sounds like the “o” in bone.
“U” sounds like the “oo” in boot.
“AY” sounds like the English word “eye".
