I hope that this is the appropriate forum to ask this question! I have been on the biggest writing kick of my life trying to finish my first novel. It's going really well and I'm getting very close to completing my first draft! While any of you writers out there know, publication can be hard and I'm having a struggle with my name. I am submitting some freelance work that is more mature and adult, while my novel is for teens and young adults. Here is my dilemma: I want to have separate published names for these different works. I think I have made the decision to use my real name for the more adult writing and use another name for my young adult writing, which as of now means the novel and series I am working on currently. I have a few ideas, but I wanted to see if anyone here had any suggestions for types of author names they may have been more drawn to as a young adult. If you have specific suggestions for name or where to get good information on picking a good name I will gladly take that too! And I will appreciate any help that you can give me. Thank you!

I have a few thoughts...

Pick something easily spelled and pronounced.

PIck something easily remembered and not too close to the name of another popular author.

Consider honoring someone special with your pen name: grandparents, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend, etc.

Look for names with a special meaning: ie - Clarabelle (dazzling; bright; brilliant; clear; famous), Carly (small champion), Emily (industrious; striving)

Consider a surname that would put you close, alphabetically, to a popular author on the shelf: ie (Patters would be very close to Patterson, James)

A few suggestions...

Amy Author  (beloved author)

Audrey Castle (Audrey - noble; strength)

Kendra Collison (Kendra - enthusiastic power)

Valerie Holmes (Valerie - strength)

Amelia Keys (Amelia - hard working)

Rose Kingman

Zoey Mabel (Zoey - life)

Beatrix Reading (Beatrix - she who brings happiness. You could say this name is one who brings happiness through reading!)

Sophia Ripley (Sophia - wise)

Phoebe Ross (Phoebe - shining one)

Trixie Rowland (Trixie - bringer of Joy)

Emily Wheelen (Emily - industrious; striving)

If I ever used a pen name it would be: Donna Kingsgate (a variation of my middle name and the name of the street I grew up on)

Good luck!

If I were creating myself a pen name, I would pick one of my favorite words (that would be okay for a last name) and use it as my last name. Then I might:

• Choose a version of my name as my first name
• Choose a name with the same meaning as my name
• Choose a name I like
• Choose a name of something/someone significant to me

All while making sure that it's:

• Easily pronounced
• Easily remembered
• Easily spelled
• Not associated with anything bad/that I don't like

Sorry if it's not too helpful, I'm not too much of a writer! I'm just bored at 10:30 after a long day of chasing after my kids. I wish you great luck! ~Mal
