So, lately I've come to love the name Rhys. Turns out I've been pronouncing it wrong the entire time. I guess it's pronounced "Rh-ees" and not "Rh-eyes" If I were to ever use that name in the future for a child or even a character in a book, do you think it would be okay to just pronounce it "Rh-eyes" since that's what I thought it was? Or would it be too confusing for those who know it as "Rh-ees"?

I think if you want it prn Rh-eyes, you may be better off simply spelling it 'Rise'. I know a couple of Reece/Rhys' and they all pronounced it the same (Rh-ees) so i think there's a strong potential for it to be consistently mispronounced..

I think you can pronounce a character name however you like, but for a child, I would stick with the original pronunciation, just because it will constantly be mispronounced. If you do want the Rh-eyes pronunciation, I think you're better off choosing Rise, as PaperHeart suggested.

I love the name Rhys and want to use it definitely as a middle name and possibly a first name.

But honestly, on a child if you want the Rh-eyes pronunciation I agree with the above posters about spelling it Rise because otherwise the child and you will be forever correcting the pronunciation for people since the majority of people know it as Ry-ees.

 

I would even spell a character in a book as Rise because people will read the name as Ry-ees otherwise. Unless a movie is made and people hear the pronunciation you want it to be or on an audio book you tell them how you want it pronounced when they record it. Even then might be a bit confusing for people reading along, seeing it and wanting to say Rh-ees but hearing Ry-eyes said instead and if people are just listening and not reading along also they might hear Rh-eyes and assume it is spelled Rise. 
 

So, sorry imho I would stick with the original pronunciation whether for a child or a book character to avoid any confusion for people.

Oh what I said in my above post still stands but I thought about this after I posted. If you spell it as Rise to get the Rh-eyes pronunciation but maybe you could also spell it as Ryse to get the same Rh-eyes pronunciation if you like the look of the ‘y’ being in there. It could work for a child or a book character and would get the pronunciation you want it to be.

I agree! Rhys is definitely Rh-ees but Ryse looks similar and is pronounced the way you like
