My husband has many upper-class friends and all of their children have very old fashioned names. I would like a name for a girl that is old fashioned, but with a newfangled twist.

Jacqueline,
Your own name would have been fantastic but may I suggest Evangeline, Clementine, Josephine, Penelope or Francesca? Timeless names, not common, though I've seen Evangeline and Clementine rising in popularity over the last six months or so. There's also funky options such as Octavia or Melinda or Evelyn. I'd love to know what name you settle on!
All the best,
Wilhelmina

Okay, old-fashioned. There are many names categories that would fit. You have Biblical names (is there anything older than God, I mean really?) There are names used by royalty. There are saints names. There are names that were popular during the 1800s. Pretty much any of these would satisfy the old-fashioned requirement, but names like Mabel, Edna and Myrtle are probably not what you are after. You would like a 'new fangled twist'. Let's see what we can do!
If I was doing an official baby name consultation with you, I would ask you for much more in-depth information, but based on 'girls name' and 'old fashioned with new fangled twist' here are some names I think you'll like
Cora
Ella
Lillian
Daisy
Stella
Flora
Charlotte
Olive
Marion
Genevieve
Leah
Phoebe
Marguerite
Cecilia
And, by the way, you are completely correct in noting that the upper class has a different naming tradition than other classes. I discuss this in Chapter 24 of my new book. But, generally speaking, when people try to imitate the naming styles of the upper class (because they want to make themselves look upper class) they end up failing miserably. (Example: kids who are named Diamond or Lexus).

Cressida
Felicity
Aurora
Tabitha
Talluhla
Aveline
Natalia
Cordelia
Guinevere
I think that a lot of the latin names would work well, also literary names seem to fit this bill.

Janessa (similar to Vanessa)
Gemma (Emma)
We did debated about naming our last one Emilia or Richelle but didn't go with those.
What did you end up naming your baby?
