Ok, so we are expecting a little girl in August. Before we knew the gender, we had planned on names like Remus after the partner's grandfather. This family was so honored, and we were quite happy with the name. However, now that we know we are having a girl we are at a loss. Remus is possibly translatable as a girl's name, but it's already a rather uncommon boy's name so I'd rather not use that name for my daughter. Instead, we are looking for a variant of the name, or a similar sounding female name. Remus is Latin in origin, meaning oar or swiftness. At the very least, we would like the name to Begin with "R" and have as close to the same sound as possible.

Names being considered currently: Ramona, Reina, Rena.

Any help you can offer would be great

My favourite alternative would be Remy. Works on both genders in my opinion, but I prefer it on a girl. Otherwise anything with an "em" sound could also work.

Or a first name beginning with an R and middle beginning with Em- to give the nickname "Rem".

Remy is cute, but your suggestion of Rena is my favorite

Remigia.  It's incredibly uncommon, and I only found sources for it in a couple of different places.  But it has Latin origins and is to be derived from words meaning "cure, remedy" or "oarsman", the latter of which ties it in closer to Remus, as well as the "Rem-" begining.  Remy would make a cute nickname, or would make a fine name on its own :)

Reema or Remy are my favorites from the above suggestions.  I've often played around with the idea of using the name Remember nn Remy which is a bit daring but would be a nice way to remember just about anyone, especially a Remus.

Good Luck!
