The Illinois senator's historic win isn't just changing politics, it's making a very unusual name much more popular, both abroad and here at home in America.

The New York Times reported that the names Barack, Obama, Michelle, Malia and Sasha have inspired first and middle names across the country.

You can read the article here: http://news.aol.com/...me-craze/263364

What do you think?
Would you name your kid after a president? (Did you name a kid after a president?)
What names can you come up with that are related to or similar to Barack, Obama, Michelle, Malia and Sasha?

I wouldn't name a child after a CURRENT President. What if he bombs out? The kid's stuck with his name forever!

I agree 100%! Is your name Lynna Naomi? Or is that your daughter's name? jw it's a very beautiful name! =)

But the name Michelle has been around for awhile & I have 2 Aunts with Michelle as a middle name. So it would be after them not the fact that it's the first lady's name. That's what stinks about names & celebrities most people will associate the names with the famous person and not that you happened to like/love the name before them or celebrities make the name way more popular. For example: On another site I go on the name Harlow is very popular now and everyone tells them it's because of ::fill in bad words here:: Nicole Richie but what if they liked it before her? But some I think they're following a trend & others liked the name before. I would never name my daughter or son after a President I love too many other names! lol :(

I mostly agree. To me, Obama is a bit of an exception b/c of the fact that he is the FIRST president of African heritage. I think that regardless of how he performs as president, he will always garner a certain amount of respect for that reason.

I would NEVER name my child Barack or Obama... horrendous names, IMO. Malia is really cute, Sasha reminds me of a dog

Barack or Obama would be o.k. as middle names. I mean I would never use the names personally but for those who truly love the name I would only use it as a middle name...Anyways I realize Barack and Obama are marked as misspelled words, that will probably change.haha

  • Interests:I LOVE reading. I'm into almost every genre and generally read a book a week, if possible. I like Iris Johansen, Karen Marie Moning, Stephen King, James Patterson, Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Diana Gabaldon, Kathy Reichs, and Robert Burns (every Scot's favorite author). I really love music and even got accepted to the Mason Gross School of Performing Arts at Rutgers University (my alma mater) for vocal performance. Unfortunately performance life was not for me, so I went into English Lit and French instead. Music is still a big part of my life, and I like a multitude of musical genres from Reggae to Rock to Opera. I've seen Carmen and La bohème each twice. (And I cry every time.) My husband and I also have a special place in our hearts for The Beatles.

I'm not surprised that people are naming their children after Barak Obama. I mean approx. 65 years after George Washington died, George Washington Carver was born. That's not to say I'd consider following the same fad.

Sasha reminds me of a dog

Reminds me of 'All dogs go to Heaven'. Wonderful movie, great name for a dog, however I think I'd have to draw the line at 'great name for a dog'.

I don't think Obama or Barak are good names. I'd never name a kid that.

I wouldn't be surprised if people did name their kids after Barack Obama, but they should probably wait until his presidency is over before they do. Because who knows? I'm not saying he will, but if he does, do something really stupid that the whole country hates, then parents are going to really kick themselves over the fact that they named their kid after an idiot [again that's if...]. I think people should wait it out, that's all I'm saying.

Besides that, Malia, Sasha, and Michelle are all fairly common names. Michelle is a little outdated and overused, Sasha [especially with Naomi Watt's son being called that] is for boys or dogs, and I personally love the name Malia. It's not because its associated with Obama, it's because I like it.

Capriana said,"I mostly agree. To me, Obama is a bit of an exception b/c of the fact that he is the FIRST president of African heritage. I think that regardless of how he performs as president, he will always garner a certain amount of respect for that reason."<--Good point.

I think it's crazy to name your baby after a president that was JUST elected. Wait until he's out of office and you see what kind of job he did first.

I don't think anyone should assume that just because he is the first African-American president, the name will naturally garner respect. I hope for the babies that have been named after him, that is true, but what if he ends up doing something really horrible, like start World War III? You just can't predict the future.

The girl names are common enough to get away with. I guess I'm one of the few people that likes Sasha for a girl!

I have thought of using the middle name
Baracha which means Blessing because it has a special meaning.
Love the names Sasha and Malia but not because I like the President. They are lovely names. Not big on the name Michelle though :D
