Rethinking a name...

In this world, magic used to be everywhere and shapeshifters and other magical animals were much more common. But many centuries later they are almost extinct. The shapeshifter in the story is young and his mother was killed by poachers, they captured him alive but he was able to escape and became friends with two of the main characters, Avril & Penn.
The shapeshifters in this world do not shift between animal and human form...they can only shift into the form of different animals. They usually have one particular form that they prefer and this one prefers the form of a Cougar.
I had originally come up with the name Lenix for the shapeshifter but now I'm not too sure about it.
The problem is that I dont want anything that is a real name or a weird spelling of an actual name, but then I don't want anything too weird and hard to pronounce either. It also wouldn't be a name that the humans give him (like a pet) but a name that his mother would have given him. (Penn also has magical powers and can speak to animals and is the only one who can talk with the shapeshifter)
I was thinking something other-worldly sounding like Kal El (Superman) but I dont want to use Kal El.
Any ideas would be great.
Thanks!

But if you think you must, here are some other-worldly names (they're actually pretty fun to think up).
Mekotith (Meko), Miou, Paos, Calesi (Cal), Kaliab (Kali), Byss, Otalen (Otie), Abbyk (Abe), Dotu, Phenoraoh (Phen), Janx

I think I like Navraj. How about Kittan (pro. kih-tahn. It's from an anime - like the name above. It sounds a bit like "kitten", but I've never noticed it before ).

So Kal El seemed to be the perfect kind of name for me but I couldn't use it for obvious reasons.
I disected the name to try and come up with something similar.
The first part Kal, is a familiar name that is rather uncommon and sort of a nick name...Cal for Calvin and such.
So I thought about similar one syllable very simple nns that are familiar but uncommon. And I came up with Tad.
Then I needed a short sound/not necessarily a name that flowed well with Tad. And I came up with Tad Bo. Bo is pron. like BOW not BOO, since I figured Tad Boo would sound too much like Taboo.
What do you think of Tad Bo and with Tad being what they would mostly call him?

I don't think it sounds like taboo, but it does make me think of tae bo.
Ha! I didnt think of that. I think the Tad part is staying but I'm rethinking the Bo part.
Hmm.

Tad Ne
Tad Re
(EYE)
Tad Jai/Jye/Ji... (sound too similar to Magi)
(OH)
Tad Ro
Tad Lo
Tad Mo
Tad Vo (same problem as Tad Bo)

Tad Sue/Su (too feminine)
I like the sound of this, but I would spell it Tzu. It's very asian, and I think it means "master".
Tad Tzu
