Where do you get inspiration for baby names? (Movies, celebrities, books, family, people you like, past crushes, etc)

Just from wherever I hear them. If I hear something that I like, I add it to my list. A lot of names I have picked out come from famous people who inspire me (Leo Cobain, Dakota Warhol). Of course, I have to think that they're last names are suitable as middle names, and only middle names. One of the names in my arsenal is Holden Morrissey which is the main character's complete name from The Catcher in the Rye. I really wish I had the kahones to use names from Harry Potter because I LOVE all of their names (minus Harry, actually, lol). I would SO love to name my kid Sirius or Remus or even Ronald, but I know they would be teased relentlessly. If I ever have B/G twins, I might even consider James and Lily. :] What about you? Where do you get your inspiration?

I mostly get inspiration from all sorts of things. Mostly from names I hear or from books. I have about 15 favorite girl name combos and about five of the names are from this book, Songs of the Humpback Whale. I also have a catalogue to this store, Delia's, and each clothing item is named after a person (like "Rebecca top") so whenever I get a new catalogue, I grab a pen and flip through it. I also like looking through baby name books. My mom used to have a nice thick one, but she let someone at her work borrow it and never got it back. That was like three years ago...

I also look to people I look up to, television shows, movies and even what I wanted to change my name to when I was younger.

And other things too, i guess...

  • Interests:I LOVE reading. I'm into almost every genre and generally read a book a week, if possible. I like Iris Johansen, Karen Marie Moning, Stephen King, James Patterson, Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Diana Gabaldon, Kathy Reichs, and Robert Burns (every Scot's favorite author). I really love music and even got accepted to the Mason Gross School of Performing Arts at Rutgers University (my alma mater) for vocal performance. Unfortunately performance life was not for me, so I went into English Lit and French instead. Music is still a big part of my life, and I like a multitude of musical genres from Reggae to Rock to Opera. I've seen Carmen and La bohème each twice. (And I cry every time.) My husband and I also have a special place in our hearts for The Beatles.

Just from here or there. Sometimes from moms yelling at their kids in the grocery store! That's how I picked Alanna to be one of my top 5 names.

I agree with a lot of you guys, it's usually just from whenever I hear them -- as a writer, I'm always jotting down names that I like and I now have several notebooks full of them! But as far as my girls go, I have to admit there wasn't really a huge inspiration... I am of Irish heritage and have subsequently always loved the name Sinéad, while Shelby... I'm not really sure, actually. It just kind of popped into my head after I settled on Sinéad

And I just have to add: I also LOVE the names used throughout Harry Potter, and must own up to the fact that I first heard Victoire in the epilogue of Deathly Hallows. I knew right then that I had to use it for a little girl someday -- I just fell in love with it :D And B/G twins named James and Lily would be precious.

My inspiration comes mainly from books, I love "Austen-esque" names like Elinor, Marianne and Lydia. I also really like Harry Potter names, names from mythology and astronomy. I only whish I had the guts to use them.
Other names come from family members that I want to honour somehow, maybe not the exact name, but a similar one.

I posted on your topic earlier and the first thing that popped into my head when I read your name choice was "Our Teddy snogging Victoire!" Haha. It really is a beautiful name, though. About the twin names, if I ever really did have twins and named them James and Lily, I think I might sneak in some Potter references as middle names. James SiriusORRonald and Lily Ginevra. I would encourage them to read the books, though, and they might not be too pleased to discover they're named after a married couple. Haha.

I love the names Andromeda and Bellatrix (even if I did muster up the balls to use this one, I never would because she killed my beloved Sirius -shakes fist-). Also Sirius as you can see from my about twenty mentions of his name. All of whick are stars (actually, Andromeda MIGHT be a galaxy, I'm not too sure). I think Firenze is a completely awesome name as well, though I'm not sure why ties it has to mythology or astronomy. I think Hermes the owl is a darling name as Hermes was the messenger in I believe Greek mythology. Or maybe that's Mercury and Hermes is Roman. I'm not sure, I can never keep then straight. But I do love the name Hermes.

I love Andromeda and Bellatrix, too -- don't think I could ever use the second one for that same reason, though :D I'm also a big fan of Narcissa, but I'm just not sure what sort of response that would get from other people. Gosh, JK Rowling was just a freaking GENIUS with naming her characters

I usually get them from books, films, telly programmes, and people in general.

I LOVE astronomy and mythology names! Andromeda (it is indeed a galaxy, LeAnne) and Bellatrix (and Cassiopeia, for that matter) are gorgeous! But if I were to have any more kids (I certainly hope not) I don't think I'd have the guts to give them names such as these (yes, I'm a coward). And Sirius is such a cool name (the character was too) - so is Draco (and despite all the hate he gets he's still one of my favourite characters).
Don't really like Narcissa (the name), it's never appealed to me in any way.

Hermes is Greek and Mercury is Roman

I think there would be nothing wrong with James and Lily for twins, except for the fact that they are married. But, even then it wouldn't really make a big difference because James and Lily are common. I think they sound great together also!

Even if people didn't associate Narcissa with Harry Potter, it would still be a name people are taken aback by. Since it's roots are in the word 'narcism.' And that's just not any good.
And she certainly was! She's just a genius, period.

I don't hate Draco. :] I appreciate him as a very well developed, round character who adds a lot to the story. It wouldn't be as good without him. Plus Draco really is a cool name, though I prefer Lucius. I even like Scorpius, which was blatantly J.K. Rowling trying to continue these types of names. I wasn't much of a fan of epilogue at all. It seemed much too rushed, like she got tired of writing and just banged something out in five minutes.
(Thanks for clarifying about Andromeda and Hermes. :])

I feel the same way about Draco, myself -- he isn't one of my favorites, but I definitely don't hate him and the series wouldn't be the same without him. The Malfoy men all have pretty nice names, if you ask me. I'm REALLY inclined to agree about the epilogue, though. It just seemed too rushed.

Hmm, I wish Draco had scrapped Scorpius and gone with Leo instead. But that would be too plebian for a Malfoy anyway  Dear old Abraxas didn't have such a nice name, though.

I disliked the epilogue too, it looked like a piece of bad fanfiction. And it's got me thinking she will keep milking the HP cow and write an 'Albus Potter and the...' series someday, in a decade or so. But the main reason why I loathed it so much was because I wanted Harry to die and he didn't. I'm such a nice fan, aren't I? Wishing for the main character to get killed... But I've already mentioned in another thread I don't like happy, sugary endings much.

Sorry this is so late. Been busy. :]
I LOVE the name Leo, it's in my top five, but it certainly doesn't seem like the name of a Malfoy. They've gotta be harsh sounding. Leo is too nice. I don't mind the name Abraxas all too much! Haha. I certainly wouldn't use it, but it's an interesting name.
If it didn't have her name on it, there'd be no way of convincing me that it was her work. I mean..a driving test? Albus Severus? Rose and Hugo? I guess the significance of the driving test was to show that there wasn't much big news in life, that it was all day-to-day stuff now and that's all well. BUT ALBUS SEVERUS?! Only because she wanted to use the "You were named after two Hogwarts headmasters..." line and nothing else. There are better ways to have used their names if she wanted to. James Albus and James Severus both sounds loads better. I admit there was part of me that wanted Harry to die just for the drama, but that part was nowhere to be seen when I was sobbing my eyes out over him giving himself to Voldemort. Ha. The end of the actual book, minus the epilogue, wasn't too sugary, however. There were deaths galore. Fred was one of the hardest to take of the whole series (right after Sirius, of course), then Lupin. The only reason I'm able to forgive her is because she FINALLY got Ron and Hermione together. Not like we've been waiting since Sorcerer's Stone! It was obvious that it was going to happen, but I really wish it would've happened sooner so we could have experienced it for a little longer. :] And of course I can't be mad at her given the fact that she brought us the books in the first place. :]

..I'm much too obsessed.

I found my daughter's name while looking for a name meaning "freedom".I fell in love with the name at that moment
Her mn Mila (mai la) is a mispronunciation of grandma's name Mila (mee lah)

With my second girl it was a little different.I happen to be from Serbian descendance and I was having a family reunion last year and there was one woman (from Slovenia) who had brought a girl along (not sure if she was her daughter or not).My relative told me the girl's name was Gea and it was the yugoslavian variation of Gaia. And that name has been on my favourites list since :)

I just use names that I hear around the place like school or on the TV. For my eldest Goddaughter, Her Mother was born in Georgia so that's where the inspiration for that came from. I also think late grandparents help inspire your child's name. My twin girls' middle names are Marie and Mary. They are the Grandmothers of my ex partner and I. I thought it would be cute to remember them like that.
