Walter and Walt for short.
Walter and a middle name of your choice and call him by the middle name.
Does the great grandfather have a middle name? Do you like it better? Maybe you could use that for your baby's name instead. It would still be honoring him. Does the great grandfather have a different last name from you? Does it sound like it could be a first name? A lot of US presidents have first names that come from maternal grandfather's last names and such.
Vintage-y names are pretty popular right now. I don't see anything wrong with just plan Walter. It's respectable.

Walden?
Would Walker be close enough-it's just one letter change...not really modernizing, but it is sort of inspired by Walter.
What about Walther?

Use Walter, with Walt as a nn - many older names are becoming "modern" again!

Walton is great, it was my first thought. I know a Walton, actually.
