Hello everyone, I'm wondering: Which names are forever embedded in our psyche s having very specific traits? Why do you think that some names are permanently tainted by their stereotypes-even if the stereotype is NOT negative-while others aren't? For example, I know many Dexters, all of whom feel okay about their names even though Dexter is a TV serial killer. And no Octavia ever complains or even assumes that her name sounds like Activia. Yet no parent would name a baby Oprah, Madonna, Elvis, or Jesus-WHY???? It's not as if Oprah Winfrey is a bad influence, right? Neither is Elvis(sure, he did become a drug addict and was once censored for swiveling his hips on TV, but the vast majority of people focused on his music skills and thus looked up to him)! When it comes to Madonna, what did she ever do wrong? And Jesus is respectable enough to be a deity! Sadly, all of these names are shunned at all costs-why?

Jesus *Hay-soos* is freakishly common where I live....

It doesn't matter what they did wrong/right... it also is what the parents like... and can you imagine naming your kid Elvis? Everyone will assume he was named for Presley.

Mine would be:

Zoey/Zoe- The actress for Zoey 101 (Jamie Lynn Spears) completely ruined it for me. I never loved it, but after that I hated it.
Naomi- This one is negative too and vulgar as well. It spells "I Moan" backwards and thats just a big No-No for me
Nevaeh- It's so "teen mom" and childish and IMO just stupid and an insult to the English Language,

I am a HUGE Elvis fan, and though you are right on all accounts, compared to what they show on TV and in music video's now, swiveling his hips is such a low offence (if at all) which is actually pretty sad to me. Same with the drug addict thing, Robert Downy Jr was an alcoholic and a drug addict as well but no one has a bad connotation with Robert. I think many people don't use Elvis because when someone says Elvis, you think of the King of Rock and Roll because at the time there was no other Elvis. Robert on the other hand is such a common name that few actually think of Robert Downy Jr first. The same with Oprah and Madonna, the names are used so little, that when when someone says them, your mind immediately goes to the people who made them famous and for many people that turns them off of a name. Jesus however is a very common name in the Latin/Hispanic community (no offence to anyone is meant there) but since they pronounce it differently than the other European languages, it's not really seen as the same as if an American/European oriented family named their child Jesus. :) (Sorry, just thought I would say that would be my reasoning for why those names aren't used despite some of the positive connotations) Though I never realized that Octavia rhymed with Activia!

I agree with both Jay and BabyNameRater. Their such famous names that everyone would assume they were named for them. When I hear Lennon I think of John Lennon from The Beatles and when I hear Paisley I automatically think of Brad Paisley so I understand where they're both coming from.

I think the problem is that all those names have just one, VERY well-known namesake.

For example, as soon as you say Elvis, the first thing anyone thinks is "Presley". As soon as you say "Oprah", the first thing anyone thinks is "Winfrey".

With Octavia, where the first thing you think wouldn't necessarily be "Activia".

I think sometimes we just get bad associations in our head that it's a subconscious thing.

But mostly, I think it's what people like. I mean, I strongly dislike the name Octavia, but I don't associate it after anyone or anything. I just don't like it.
And names like Elvis and Madonna... well they are just such famous people, anyone who is named that is going to be automatically associated/asked if they were names after them. There is no escaping it... people will automatically assume and I guess parents don't want that.

Even regular names like Skylar or David can have a negative effect to a singular person, i dated a guy named Kyle who was a very horrible person therfore i cringe every time i hear the name, although names like Elvis and Oprah are connected with such famous people its not hard for me to take a step back and go "I dislike the name Oprah in general" or "Elvis, now thats actually a pretty cool name imo" So its really just the person, some people who may not have negative feelings toward the names may still just not like the name no matter who its connected too, or maybe they just fear the general public is going to label their child and just stay away from the name anyway.
