So. Adelaide is currently one of my favorite names (maybe the favorite). I've loved it for awhile now. If I had a baby, I would probably use Adelaide as a first name, if the baby were a girl. Adelaide is such a perfect representation of what half of my naming style is at the moment; I say half because my naming style is split into two completely different...genres?? Haha, I don't think that's the right word...
Anywho.
I only have one problem with this name: the nickname options. Now, if it were completely up to me, I would call my (nonexistent) child just Adelaide, all day, everyday, 24/7...
But, most names get shortened, especially if they're as long-ish as Adelaide. I think Adelaide is so beautiful on her own, but since most people have at least one nickname that they go by sometimes, I need to be, um, prepared. It figures that the most obvious (and most used probably) nickname for Adelaide - Addy - I can't stand. Like, I hate it with a passion. It sort of makes me want to be violently ill when I think about it. Big problem, right?

I really need suggestions. I would hate to use this name that I love so much in the middle name spot (or worse: not at all!) simply because I couldn't come up with a suitable nickname.
Help. : (

Any other suggestions??

Hmm... I'm not really sure what other nickname you could get from Adelaide. Maybe Ada, Del, Adele? I don't really like any of those though and agree that Adelaide as a full name sounds way better than any of its nicknames. My name is Elizabeth which has tons of nicknames but my mom just told everyone that 'Liz' wasn't my name and it wasn't a big deal or anything. You could just do the same :)

I love Adelaide! It's so pretty and elegant. Hmm... how about Lady / Laidy? Or Laida / Leda?

Addy would be my first thought, and knowing how you feel about it i feel like i almost shouldnt have written it :P but realistically i think kids at school will probably call her Addy. I like lady but cant see kids at schol calling a classmate Lady, but i think it would be really cute at home.

Ellie might be kind of a stretch but it's a potential choice

@ElizabethRuth: Really? Hearing that makes me feel better, haha. Maybe I would just do the same, and insist on Adelaide? Hmm, maybe instead of Addy, I could use Ada. It would still be similar to Addy, but something that I could tolerate.(;

@Meghan<3: Thank you! Yeah, I've considered Lady. I think Lady would be so precious on a little girl. Not sure what others would think of it..

@brittany111:  And yeah, that's what I'm afraid of..or worse, that my Adelaide might prefer to be called Addy. That would kill me, lol.

@Permanent Rose: Thanks for the suggestion! Although, there are so many little Elle's/Ellie's running around nowadays, I'm sort of adverse to using that one. That's why I prefer Nora as a nickname for Eleanor.

So far I have:

Ada/Aida/Aidey
Adele
Del/Dellie
Edie

Ela/Ella/Elle/Ellie
Lady/Lai/Laide

Besides the previous nn I can potentially see Ela Adelaide or Ella which is slightly diffrent from the Elle or Ellie norm and Lai which I really like it reminds me of Hawaii, flowers, and beautiful dancers :) I hope you find the nn you are looking for and that it works out.

And thanks for the input. I've got some good ideas now for better nicknames.

I wrote a story once and the main character's cousin was named Adelaide :) I called her Laidie, just based on the ending of her name, not realizing until the middle of the book it sounded like Lady XD

I think Aida could be a possibility. As I understand it, that name is typically pronounced aye-EE-duh, but AY-duh might be a cute nn for Adelaide. Maybe even Aidey, but that looks/sounds strange to me. And Aide is just a word... although so are several other names, that's just not something I would personally want to call my kid.
Just like everyone else, I think Lady is super, super adorable, too.

Thanks, Aida is pretty, too. Going on the list!
And even though Aidey might sound sort of strange at first, it's totally doable as an alternative to Addy I just realized! Addy ---> Aidey. Yay.(:

I have to agree that realistically people would possibly call her Addy. Like you, I do believe in calling someone by their given name not a nickname to show how beautiful Adelaide is.

Yeah, that's why I consider Aidey to be suuch a good alternative - it's so close to Addy, but I would be able to tolerate it so much better! Ha.
And thank you!(:
