So, one of my FAVORITE movies ever is The Sound of Music... to "honor" it (not sure if that is the right word!), I came across the name Edelin (ay-dlynn) pronounced like edelweiss from the song in the movie. I also might like Edelina pronounced the same way. Thoughts?
Should it be a middle to prevent mis-pronunciation?

Thanks!

I feel that it should be a middle, just because it isn't a phonetically easy name

Just after I read your initial post, I saw a birth announcement for a baby girl Edelweiss.

I think Edelin would fit in with today's style name, and some may argue that it is more wearable than Edelweiss, but I find that the pronunciation would be less clear.  I could see this being mistaken as EE-duh-lyn (like Edie) or Ed-uh-lyn (like Edison), same with Edelina.  Edelina resembles a latin name so I would use a latin pronunciation (Eh-duh-lee-na).  If you want the AY sound at the beginning, Adelyn could work, but then you are loosing the beauty of Edelweiss.

Personally, I think that Edelweiss would make a lovely name, and has the possible nickname Edel (Ay del) or even just Del.

If you want to look at it another way, you could find a name with a similar meaning.  Edelweiss literally translates to Noble (edel) white (weiss).  So finding a name meaning noble and/or white could be another way to 'honor' your favorite movie.

Adelaide

Edelmira

Heidi

Eugenia

Audrey

Alarice

Alba

Berwyn

Bianca

Ceridwen

Eirween

Gwenlyn

Rowena

Winifred

Wynne

And another name I came across, Adelvice, which is a variant of Adelaide so the first syllable is AH not AY but you could spell it this way and pronounce it as Edelweiss.

I love it! I think it would be a great first or middle name. Altough, I wonder if it might get pronounced EE-dlynn with a long E. Have you toyed with any 'A' spellings?

Just thinking....
