Sometimes with names like Gabriella and Nathaniel (our babies names) it can be hard to think of shortening them. Do you call her Gabby, Gabrielle or Gabriella? Nate, Nathan, or Nathaniel? You should pick a name that sounds good with all forms of the babies name, so if, in the future they want to shorten it or lengthen it they can.

For Example:

Nathaniel Beck sounds good, But Nate Beck is awkward and choppy.

Gabby Odela is pretty, But Gabriella Odela is too monotonous.

Go with something that sounds nice no matter how you say it.

That being said, we cant think of middle names for our babies!  :(

Twins Gabby and Nate will be here in June and we need middle names!

Hello! I'm a little confused, but I hope this helps...

When you select a nickname, you pick a cute and sweet short name/word for your child that you can use when you want to call him/her by other name.
Nicknames change all the time. Sometimes our family members and friends have multiples nicknames for us. And sometimes, those nicknames are not related to our birth name.
In my opinion, you need to find a middle name that goes well with the first name and the last name. Most people don't combine their nicknames with their last names. I don't think I've met someone that goes by their nickname + middle name.

Is your daughter's name Gabrielle or Gabriella?
She can go by: Gabby, Gab, Brielle, Briella, Brie, BriBri, Ella, Elle, Abby, Belle, Bria, Ellie, Gabbs, Rie, Gigi, Gaga,...

Nicknames for Nathaniel: Nathan, Nate, Nat, Niel, Tate, Thaniel, Natty, Nates, Nay, Than, Tanner,...

I would have never picked my middle with my married last, but no one calls me by my full name. Married names are unpredictable for the future. So go for the name that you like the best. Choose a nickname, if you like, that you think sounds nice. While your child may choose a different nickname in the future, s/he will likely not choose one that doesn't sound good together. You can't predict all of the nicknames that might be used (so many have nothing to do with the first name) that you will drive yourself crazy trying. Pick what you like - even choose the nickname as the full name!
