Ive been looking for names that mean lion as my husbands middle name is Lyons after his mothers maiden name. My grandfather was nicknamed Leo both because of his middle name Lionel and his last name which was shortened as another nickname to Cat. Ive always liked the name Ariel but I just cant get over the mermaid association. Ariella does not remind me of the mermaid but its a little fancy for my style and would probably get shortened to something. Do other people strongly associate Ariel with the mermaid or just me? Do you prefer one over the other? Any other suggestions? Ive also considered Mariel because my moms name is Marie and my MIL is Mary. His grandfather was Elwood nn Ellie, maybe Arielle nn Ellie? Thanks!

I know a lot of Ariel's, both boys and girls and I think that's why I no longer associate it with just the little mermaid. I do love Ariella though and it feels a little more feminine to me. It's not too fancy IMO. And the nickname Ellie is very cute. (There's also Ari and Aria, although they've become as popular as Ellie, I would say)

I believe one of our members has a daughter named Ariella also. I think it's great.

EDIT: Arielle is also gorgeous, but like DelphiMoon said, it's not worth using if you don't love them.

I think that Ariel is a tad too associated with the little mermaid for me, personally, but that could be because I don't know any Ariels. Ariella is stunning, but I wouldn't use it if you're not in love. Mariel is gorgeous, and honors everyone. I think it's the best of your names.

Honestly, I do automatically think of the mermaid. Ariella is a really pretty name though. I've only known two Ariella's so it's not a super common name either.
