So Scrubs has definitely shown me the appeal of using this name for a girl (and with a love for the nicknames Ella/Elle/Ellie, I'm certainly intrigued by this name). It's rare that I like such a masculine name for a girl, but I have considered this one. Actress Marla Sokoloff named her daughter Elliotte, very much feminizing the spelling. It's much like Juliet/Juliette - and even sounds a lot like Violet, Scarlett, etc, which makes a traditionally masculine name feel much more feminine. It's much like how Emmett has always kind of felt a little feminine to me in pronunciation (and nicknames.) Spell Emmette like this and could it be a girl's name?

But back to Elliot. So of course I've been playing around with spellings. I feel like it you eliminate the 'ot' at the end and replace it with the 'et/ette' ending, the subtle pronunciation differences really make it more and more girly. But is Elliette too clunky looking? Does Eliette look weird? And I'm not too keen on Elliet.

So what do you think? Can Elliot truly work for a girl? Which spellings work?

EDIT: Maybe just Elliett? I think I might actually like that one best

Elliot is boy to me, sorry. I understand what you mean about it sounding feminine, though. I guess if you wanted to use it, the spellings Elliotte or Eliette would be okay... though the latter looks a bit awkward to me.

To me i think it's al boy. My brothers name is Jordan Elliott and a few months ago he came out really upset and said someone thought he was a girl at uni when reading an application for something. Im just getting around Jordan being so popuar on girls, Elliott im not ready for hehe. I can definately see Elliott being more usable for a girl than Jordan with the whole Elle.Ella. Ellie aspect. I just think im a bit biased because of seeing my brother so upset at potentially being thought of a girl (he is rather sensative and emotional, where as alot of people probably wouldn't really care).
I tend to stick with traditional spellings Eliot.Elliot,Elliott but if wanting people to know its a girl i would probably change the spelling, Ellyot or something like that. People are alwaysadding Y's in to make names more girly ie Jordyn, Rylee etc.

I completely understand. There's a lot of names that I wouldn't swap over to the girls' side. And Ys in names just to make them more feminine make me cringe, lol, so that wouldn't be an option for me

I just saw your edit of Elliett, i think that could work, as it includes Ellie and is very similar to Juliett which is very girly. I totally understand about the Y's too!

Elliot I definitely find to be all boy. However, Elliet(te) is a names with previous grounds for girls. I've read a couple different things, some saying its a variant from the Hebrew Eliana, others saying its a traditional french name. I feel like the latter sounds the truest, but thats just my opinion. I also find a difference to Elliott and Elliette, I say them differently. Elliott blends into each other a bit more to me, and I tend to pronounce the O myself. But for Elliette, I say it like two different names, Ellie-Ette. I have no idea if this makes any sense lol!

So that all being said, no I don't think Elliot can work for a girl. But I do think Elliette is a perfectly fine choice! Entirely feminine name with background, nothing masculine about it :)

Hope this helps!

I'm with you. Scrubs definitely turned me on to Elliot for a girl. Right now it is one of those few names that I like on both genders.

The spelling Elliotte would be my pick. Or maybe Eliette?
