I need help to find the perfect Native American name for a baby boy.I don't care wheather it is for the first or the middle name. But somewhere in the name we want Daniel. The problem we have with the name, is we can hardley pronounce any of them, or it doesn't go with Daniel either way. Our last name is Smith. Please help.!

Daniel Chayton (Chayton means Falcon from Sioux)

Dakota Daniel (Dakota means Friends from Sioux)

Daniel Gad (Gad means Juniper tree from Navajo)

Daniel Jacy (Jacy means Moon)

Here are some options -->

CHAYTON: Native American Sioux name meaning "falcon."
EDITON: Native American Omaha name meaning "standing as a sacred object."
HINTO: Native American Dakota name meaning "blue."
HONANI: Native American Hopi name meaning "badger."
HONON: Native American Miwok name meaning "bear."
LISE: Native American Miwok name meaning "salmon head rising above water."
NIYOL: Native American Navajo name meaning "wind."
DAKOTA: Native American Sioux name meaning "friend, ally."
MANDAN: Native American tribe from the Missouri River Valley.

I think I like Daniel Honon best. Goodluck!

Please don't. =/

No offense, it's just that, as a Native American myself, people are often...misguided... when it comes to Native American culture, so I feel it's necessary to inform people when I can.

None of the names those nice ladies gave you are real Native American names. It's not their fault; websites and books are filled with inaccuracies like this.

On the blog on my website I give a bunch of reasons why I think "Native American" names are one big bad idea if you want to check it out.

I think Daniel would be a nice name.

Yeah, I can tell you right now that those were just names I found on a website that I thought sounded nice, so don't take my word for it. Elle's got a really good point, but if your set on this idea, you should definitely do some in-depth research or ask someone with more authority on the matter. Or like Elle said, just stick with Daniel - I think that's a great name for a little boy.

Elle's suggestion makes a lot of sense. Is there any reason why you want to use a Native American name? I think Daniel is a very classic sounding name

I wanted a Native American name because, on my fathers side, they are full blooded Indian. I'm proud of our culture and where we came from, but I would like a real name.

what tribe?

are they enrolled members of the tribe?

if they aren't enrolled members, they can't guarantee their ancestry.

Going off of this, all of the Native Americans I know (I'm talking Indians who still live on reservations) bear what you would call "white" names.... Richard... Edward... Samuel...none of them have the traditional "Native American" names you find on these websites.

You're not going to find a Native American named Dakota.
