I've liked Percy for a girls name for a while now. I originally heard the name in a movie staring John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson (A Love Song for Bobby Long). Scarlett Johansson's character in the movie is named Purslane "Pursy" (purslane is a type of flower/weed). However I prefer the more traditional spelling, Percy.

Anyway, I crossed it off my list of girls names because my nieces are named Luci & Gracie and it is confusing enough having two kiddo's around who have two syllable names ending in -CEE.

I've been looking through my list of girls names and there are very few that I LOVE and could actually see myself using...and Percy is one of them. I'd hate to cross it off my list just yet. That being said, I'm not in love with the middle name that I originally picked out...Adalay (Add uh lay). So I would love your help coming up with a middle name for Percy.

Here are some of the names on my list which could be used for middles and will give you an idea of what I like...

Althea
Augustine
Bryony
Celeste (right now I have the combo Molly Celeste)
Delilah
Eloise
Eugenia
Georgiana (right now I have Edie Georgiana)
Gwendolyn or Wendolyn
Larue
Laurence
Lorraine
Margaux
Matilda
Odessa
Ophelia
Patience
Pheriby (right now I have the combo True Pheriby)
Tulane/Tulaine
Winifred (right now I have combo Farris Winifred)

If possible I'd also like to use a bird name or something relating to birds...

Altaira
Elsa
Gayle
Linnet
Phoebe
Piper
Willet
Wren

I personally think Percy is too masculine on its own, especially with this spelling. If you were to use Percy as a stand alone name, I would suggest changing the spelling (Pursy, Pursie, Percie, Persey, Pursey etc) Also, using it as a nickname for something along the lines of Purslane would make it more usable for a girl imo too.

But that is just my opinion that I wanted to put out there.

From your list, I would like:

Percy Tulane and Percy Gayle the best

I do tend to find Percy to be masculine myself, but I guess I can see it on a girl. It would be a tad matchy with her cousins, but its still cute <3

Are you interested in using any of the names you mentioned liking in your post as a middle name? If so, I think all of these would work..

Percy Augustine
Percy Delilah (LOVE this!!)
Percy Eugenia
Percy Georgiana
Percy Gwendolyn
Percy Larue (has some pretty good flow to it I must say!)
Percy Lorraine
Percy Matilda
Percy Margaux
Percy Ophelia
Percy Tulane
Percy Altaira
Percy Gayle
Percy Linnet
Percy Willet
Percy Wren

Percy Baywren
Percy Avis
Percy Mavis

I found those three bird names above, I found an "offbeat bird names" topic on nameberry and those popped up. Thought they were cute!

As for other suggestions... I'm a bit stumped at the moment :( I've got to make sure I come back and reply when I think of more <3

Sorry, but I don't like Percy on a girl. When people hear "Percy [insert surname here]" they will automatically think its a boy! Even though unisex names are common, this isn't unisex. It's masculine. Sorry, but think of the teasing she would get! Why not put Percy in the middle?...or better yet, pick a name (maybe unisex) that is similar to Percy?

Paisley
Parsley
Payton
Phoenix

from your list I like the ones w/out a strikethrough; ones w/ strikethroughs are the ones that may not be the best choices:

Althea
Augustine

Bryony
Celeste (right now I have the combo Molly Celeste)
Delilah
Eloise
Eugenia
Georgiana (right now I have Edie Georgiana)
Gwendolyn or Wendolyn
Larue
Laurence
Lorraine
Margaux
Matilda
Odessa-means "angry woman"-so better that you avoid it :)
Ophelia
Patience
Pheriby (right now I have the combo True Pheriby)
Tulane/Tulaine
Winifred (right now I have combo Farris Winifred)

Altaira
Elsa

Gayle
Linnet
Phoebe
Piper
Willet
Wren

Another tip: Most of the time, it's best to keep a name's original spelling so the bearer doesn't have to respell it. I recommend that you only alter the spelling if the original one would cause a problem. Keep the name recognizable, though!

Example: Titian. The first 3 letters would probably cause "tiit" jokes. Then look at the same name w/ a spelling modification:

Tishan. It's still easily pronounced as TEE-SHAN, but eliminates embarrassing nicknames

Also: Krszystof (Polish/Hungarian variant of Christopher)

A better choice: Christoff

I really like Percy, but it does seem masculine to me. Luci, Gracie, and Percy do sound similar, but I actually like them together. I think my favorite combo for it would be Percy Linnet!

I like Percy, for a boy and a girl. I think it works for either. :)

I really like all your names. :) They have a really cool vibe to them, and although I personally wouldn't use them I think they sound great. :D

My association with Percy is that horrible, horrible jail keep from The Green Mile. I have never wanted to tear a book or punch a television SO bad. I hated him! So, my association with the name is not that great, but that being said, I think Percy could be pulled off on a little girl with the right middle name :) And CiCi could be a possible nickname :) I mean, Spencer is being used for girls, why can't Percy :)

Out of the names you listed, I like

Percy Larue

Percy Linnet

Percy Wren

More helpful tips:

Look up the meanings of names before you use them. Consider teasing potential. For example: Percy Isaiah Gunderson=P.I.G. Or Larue. I like it, but the last syllable is pronounced like Rue, which means "regret". You might want to move it to the middle and NOT use the name or nickname Rue. :) :) Being an herb doesn't make up for the meaning. :(

No everyone is going to know the meaning of a name.

Actually, I only know the meanings of a handful of names. So, I don't think meaning is a big deal unless you want a name that has a specific meaning. (i.e. you want your child to be names after a father's joy hence the name Abigail) Rue may mean regret, but Larue is a pretty/spunky name.

no offense. I'm just saying. I looked up the meanings of my children's names as well as my own, This is what I got back.

My son's name is Aasyn Giovanni and his name means:

To be seated/Pollution & God is gracious.

My daughter is Hayleigh Elisabeth and hers means:

Hay clearing or hay woods & My God is a vow.

Then my name means: the bay, or laurel plant &

ash wood /ash tree.

My mother named me from names she loved, as did I with my children (obviously, since my son's name can mean pollution.) So, IMO, if you love it then use it.

No offense taken, LULUOxxic. But even though not everyone knows the meaning of a name, but there will always be someone, even the bearer herself, who WILL know! You don't want to name your child "regret",
'unlucky one," or "lame one"!

I don't think meanings are that important, especially in American culture (I know other cultures really value the meaning of names, however) But in a country where we name our kids based off our taste, meaning shouldn't be a huge deal. The name Emily doesn't even have a great meaning (rival) so I don't think that's something that should necessarily make or break a name for you - as long as you don't name your child a name that means regret because you regret having them, then I don't see why the meaning of the name should even matter :]

I actually hate the name Percy on boys, but I just discovered via you that I love it for a girl!

From your list:
Percy Althea
Percy Delilah
Percy Georgiana (Percy Georgina sounds really cute too, and I think flows a bit better)
Percy Gwendolyn
Percy Margaux
Percy Matilda
Percy Wren

Other bird name combos:
Percy Alouette
Percy Jay (might be too masculine since they are both traditionally boys names)
Percy Starling
Percy Avis
Percy Phoenix

Some other middle names that might be your style:
Percy Genevieve
Percy Agatha
Percy Maribel
Percy Aurelia
Percy Evangeline
Percy Cordelia/Cornelia
Percy Genevra
Percy Athena
Percy Juliet
Percy Allegra

I know you said you're not in love with it anymore, but I think Percy Adalay sounds great, as well as Percy Adelaide/Adele/Adeline

From everything in this post, my favorites are Percy Gwendolyn, Percy Matilda, Percy Alouette, Percy Genevieve, Percy Cordelia, and Percy Juliet.
