Lucy vs. Adorable vs. Grandma Vibes

I love the name Lucy. When I told my mom her face fell and was disappointed. She said it was a very grandma-ish name. She suggested I use a more modern or timeless name that ends in ie or y. What do you all think?

I think Lucy is sweet. The only opinion that matters is yours. Lucy is an established name with meaning and origin, not misspelled etc. There's nothing wrong with it. If you do care about what your mum thinks though, how about Lucia or Lily?

I'd say 'typical kid name" rather than either of the options in the poll. Obviously a lot of people think it's adorable since there are so many kids named Lucy, but it seems overdone to me. At least in my area, which is in the Midwestern US.

The Social Security numbers say it's the 49th most popular name in the US, but it's higher than that because it's a nickname for other names and they don't count those in with the popularity of just Lucy. For instance, one of the two Lucy's in my niece's class is Lucille nn Lucy.

If you do go with Lucy, I'd use it as a nickname so she can use the full name if she ends up with other Lucy's in her class. Lucille, Lucinda, Lucia, Luciana/Luciana, ect. My favorite form is Lucinda since you can also get the nicknames Indie and Cindy from it.

Lucy is great! It doesn't give me grandma vibes at all. It's timeless and classic!

Your mom is a fine person I'm sure but not up on current events.

Lucy is so cute and very in but not overly so. Please use it. Once Lucy makes her appearance and woos your mom with her cuteness she won't be able to imagine her with any other name.

Tell mom this is your baby and you get to name her. Last year alone over 4,300 baby girls were named Lucy. Almost all of the top 10 names were on the lists a hundred years ago. If you love Lucy, go for it.

Your mom needs to get online and look up names. She will find many of the "grandma" names are in the top 100. Eleanor, Hazel, Sophia, Sarah, Elizabeth,Emma and more are there.

I love Lucy! I faced the same issues with my children. They're George(Georgie), Theodore(Theo), Silas(Si), and Lucille(Lucie). If you love it, use it. Good luck!

Lucy/Lucie sounds like a timeless classic to me!! It's so cute! I picture a little girl when I hear it, not an on old lady. However, longer versions of it like Lucille & Lucinda are very dated/grandma-ish, I definitely picture an old lady when I heard those. Lucia & Luciana seem "modern" enough

I personally know 4 Lucy's. 3 are under the age of 5 (Lucy, Lucie & Lucia nn Lulu) & the other is my grandma (Lucianna nn Lou)

I don't see it as a grandma name at all, but I agree I can't picture a baby Lucille or Lucinda, I'd say away from those if you don't want a grandma name LOL

Your mom should be happy you're not choosing a name like Kaisleigh, James or Gertrude LOL. So many ways to go wrong naming 1a baby girl, Lucy is not one of them.

I think Lucy is timeless. Alot of y and ie names are trendy and they won't be around very long like Oakley for example.

I do also like Lucia and the nickname Lulu is so cute! See I just love everything about this name. It's adorable to me. I think she got hung up on "I Love Lucy" and thinks it's old from that show and the name belonging to that era.

Your baby, your choice. She had her turn. 😀

I do not think it gives off grandma vibes at all, but I also understand that maybe your mom is into modern or trendy names, and 30 years ago when she was picking names for her babies, it was stuff like Ashley, Amanda, Jessica, and Jennifer. Now those names sound dated, but she might still be in that mindset because those were the favorite names of her generation. Even by 2000, though, Emma was dominant, and Emma was absolutely a grandma name prior to the mid 90s. It might have even started the whole grandma name comenack trend.

So, anyway, your mom might need to refresh her ideas here. Lucy fits in with current trends - both in terms of older names making a comeback and trendy sounds with short syllables (Macy, Maya, Mia, Ava, Emma, Sophie, Lily, aaaand: Lucy). 😀

Lucy is a beautiful name. I've been in love with this name since I was about 5 years old. I'm definitely using it for my daughter. The only thing I don't like is that it's gained a lot of popularity. But I absolutely love it. Best of luck!!!

When I hear the name Lucy I always picture Lucy from The Peanuts Gang. She was a little girl, so I always picture a little girl. Not a Grandma name at all imo.

My sister says my son's name and a lot of his friends' names are old mannish. I think that a lot of those kind of things are cyclical, so names that give off grandma vibes to older generations sound fresh to younger people who weren't around the last time they were popular. I don't think Lucy will sound old fashioned on a baby born now. I think it's a really pretty name.
