which vs. name?

We’ve decided to name our son/daughter after a famous person from our country, but since our son/daughter will be growing up in the US, we want to know what Americans think of the names we have on our list pronunciation-wise. Thank-you! Katrin+Andrus

I like Karl, Andrus nn Andy and Jaan, but spelled Jan. For girls I like most of the names, but Kaie, Miina and Lydia are my favourites.

What country are you from? Some of these names are are very nice and I am curious where they come from. Anyway, I like Boys:Karl and Andrus and Oskar. Girls: Lydia, Marie and Kaie.

Thank-you. I’m from Estonia and my husband is from Finland. These are all first names of important or famous people from there.

I’m not a fan of Gerd or Madis. I like the others. I think you will find that Americans mispronounce Johann or Johannes to sound like the girl’s name Joann or Joanna.
I think you will have a similar issue with Jaan, being pronounced like Jan on occasion.

Karl, Oskar, and Andrus are the most "American," in sound and the least likely to cause trouble.
Oskar here is usually spelled Oscar, and it’s often given to boys of Hispanic origin.

I like all your girls’ choice as well. Obviously, you will have some people who pronounce Jaanika, Marie and Kaie incorrectly.
You may also run into trouble with Miina and Ene.
Interestingly, a lot of your girls’ choices are pretty trendy or similar in sound to names that are currently trendy here in the states.
The only one I’d avoid is Hella. Depending on where you live, you may find a level of religiousness in America that is quite a bit more than what you have in Germany, and I think the fact that it looks close to Hell may give some pause.
