Like the Name vs. Like the Meaning vs. Special Reason

How did you pick your child’s name? My husband and I are expecting our first child, but were curious to see how other people have chosen their children’s names. Did you pick the name because you just liked it? Because you liked the meaning? Or for a special reason (i.e. family name, name of a place, etc.) Thanks, Cecelia and Jonesy

all family names!! I love family names, my first and middle names were both for family, so my children all have(or will have) family names!

Our son’s name is very meaningful to us. His first name is his dad’s hobby (Race), and his middle name is my maiden name.

We chose fns that we loved and family names as mns. With our younger daughter we got lucky and chose the French version of my grandmother’s name, which was also what my husband was going to be named if he had been a girl, so his mom really liked that. We have also considered names involved with where we honeymooned. GL!!

My kids are:

Ashley Katherine (8)...my name is Ashley, my mother in law is Katherine, and I used Ashley to follow a family tradition

Owen Charles (5 1/2)...my husband’s middle name is Charles and I just loved Owen

Zachary Alan (5 1/2)...my husband’s cousin/best friend’s middle name is Zachary and my dad, brother, and nephew are named Alan

Cara Joy (19 mos)...my mom’s name is Joy, she almost named me Cara (and I just loved the name) and my husband’s grandmother is named Caran (like Karen)

We love using family names. Owen is the only name that isn’t a family name. I just loved it so much and had to use it! Cara is technically not a family name but it was taken from Caran so we still considered it a family name. Good luck with your little one!

I think you should choose the name you love. If you love a family name then go for it but I say it’s your child and your choice. I named my first born Kelsey simply because I had loved that name since I was a little. gl

We chose names that we liked and then narrowed it down by the meanings. Both of their middle names are after family.

We have a mix.

Benjamin Asher - I love the name Benjamin and my husband actually liked it as well. Plus, my grandfather who passed was named Bennie. Asher is from my favorite book as a girl "The Giver." It also reminded me of my grandfather’s middle name "Shurl." My husband liked the name Ash so it was good to go.

Nikolai Hayes - My husband mentioned the name Nikolai (name of lead singer in a band we liked as teens) and I fell in love. I held onto it for years. Hayes I decided I liked because of Maryland Terps Basketball. Eric Hayes was/is my favorite player on the team. We call him "Hayes" and it grew on me. Plus, I saw it used as a name, which solidified it for me.

Natalia Emmeline - I became hooked on this name when I was pregnant because I was on bedrest the majority of my pregnancy and was stuck watching daytime tv. CSI:Miami has a character named Natalia. My best friend growing up was named Natalie. I love the name Thalia, so it clicked. Not sure where I saw Emmeline but I liked it.

Aurelia Evangeline - Love this name. Aurelia is from Love Actually. My favorite movie. It’s classy and elegant. Evangeline I heard on Nanny McPhee (bedrest is so helpful to naming babies!) and I loved the accent and just the sound and beauty of it.

I don’t like choosing names to fit a theme or to name kids after family, especially when the family is still around. I never would have named my son after my grandfather if I hadn’t of LOVED the name for years. Pick a name you love. The child is the legacy, not the name.

We picked names we liked. I didn’t want any names that had nicknames. We didn’t want their initials to spell anything. I wanted a common, normal first name. I wanted their middle names to be a little unusual--either spelling or just not often used. I also didn’t want any family names because I didn’t want anyone to feel left out. We did give both of our children Biblical names, and if we have more children, they will have them as well. My kids are Sara Mackensi and Noah Colby.
