keep Lana vs. change spelling vs. change name

Hi everyone! My husband and I chose the name Lana for our little girl before realizing that backwards it spells the word anal. How big a deal do you think that is? Please don’t choose "change name" if you just don’t like the name Lana. I’m trying to figure out how bad it is to have a name spell that backwards, so please base it solely on that. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you SO much!

I dont think that it is that bad. Although in my family we all know what eachothers names spelled backward were...and we occationally called eachother by our backwards names ie....my name is Haley so sometimes my brothers would call me Yelah, Brandon was Nodnarb and Ruston was Notsur etc....If it bothers you maybe Lanah? It is a pretty name. Good Luck!

I like the name. You might consider Lanah or Lanna to keep it clean.

How are you pronouncing it? Law-nuh? or Lay-nuh?

I’m really on the fence about this one.

I think Lana is a beautiful name. Lona, Lonna or Launa would be other spellings.

I know when kids are first learning to write, they sometimes write things backward... I have a drawing that I signed IMAK when I was little.

I think it’s a really pretty name, and I wouldn’t worry too much about the backwards spelling.

But you may also consider spelling her name Lanah or Lanna. Both look really pretty and have the same pronounciation.

I didn’t even think about the word anal until you mentioned it. I don’t really think it would be a problem. Good luck!

I would worry about the backwards spelling. I’m also one to worry about what initials spell, so it may just depend on the person. However, there are varying degrees: Naomi (I Moan) not a huge deal. I find Anal to be pretty bad though, and I remember playing around with backwards names quite a bit as a child. In fact, there was a special book made for me where the character, a giraffe, was named Ylime, which is my name backward. I can’t imagine a childrens book about a giraffe named Anal, can you? I would personally change the whole name because Lana is the only spelling I think is ok, although I don’t care for the name. What about Lorna, Leona, or Lene/Lenna? GL, and I know this must not be any fun when you love the name.

Thank you so much for your help! Its pronounced Lawn-ah, like Lana Turner, if that helps.

I like Lana as it is, but I would pronounce it Lay-na if I just saw the name. What about Launa?

Personally, I would change the name because I can’t think of any other spellings that I like. But if you like it, maybe you could just keep the spelling Lana if the "anal" thing doesn’t bother you, or you could find a spelling that you like: Lanna, Lanah, or Lonna? Is there any other spelling that you like?

I don’t think the anal thing would bother her as an adult, but I do worry about the kids making fun of her in school for it, especially at the sensitive age of elementary and middle school. It is a pretty adult word, though, I’m not sure what age they would figure that out?

We are considering the spelling of Lanah. Also, I have never seen the spelling of Launa before, and I think its really interesting. Thank you so much for that one! I will have to ask my husband what he thinks about that.

I don’t like Lanna. This might seem weird, but I like to google the names we are considering to see what the people are like, make sure they aren’t all mugshots or something, lol. Anyway, there is a terribly frightening photo of a women named Lanna that is burned into my mind!

Thanks so much for your help!

Lonah is very pretty i like this spelling

Other than Lana, I like Lanah best. Launa looks like Luna at first glance, and I think it would be mispronounced a lot. And Lonah would phonetically be pronounced Lone-uh. I’d either go with Lana, Lanah, or choose a different name.

I have had this exact issue ever since I realized that Lana backwards is "anal." I have switched the spelling I like the best several times for that reason and also to try and decide which would phonetically be the best....top picks are Lana, Lahna, or Launa. Could always go with Lonna, but I just don’t like that spelling as much as the others. I love the way Lana looks and it helps that I like the number 4 :) Lahna, I’m afraid would be pronounced like Lanna. I really love the name and it’s one that my husband and I actually agree on. It also is a combination of my mom and both of our grandmother’s names. So, when the time comes we’ll see what happens. Good luck!

I have a daughter named Lanna and it's said the same as Lana (law-na) Personally I like the spelling Lawna!! Couldn't convince her father to use the W. :( What might be best is a special character a, so Lana with the two dots over the first a. Good luck all!
