something else vs. to think about

Here’s something I’ve noticed. It takes a certain kind of good-looking, smart, great-personality kid to carry off a "unique" name. And of course everyone likes to imagine their longed-for child being like that (good-looking, smart, great personality). I would counsel you, however, to keep in mind that your child may be lumpish and sullen. Or just boring in that way that most of us are. Imagine the name you have in mind applied to someone who is bland or even downright drab. Go through your high school yearbook and find the kids who were everything you don’t want your kid to be. Apply the name you have in mind to that person. Does it work at all? See, a strange name will just be a quirky, fun thing on a kid who already has everything going for him or her, but will be the final nail in the coffin for a kid who has any significant struggles. Think hard about the kind of kid you can REALISTICALLY expect (look at your partner and yourself as you really are, not as you wish you were. Kids really do tend to be very much like their parents). Don’t give your likely to be mousy, plump, pig-nosed daughter an Italian fashionista princess name. Don’t give your likely to be a spindly rabbit-faced acne-prone son a buff-hero-in-a-romance-novel name. It’s funny and *terrible* when the mousy plump girl is named Gianna-Vittoria, or when the little pimply git is named Blade. It’s like they have "My mom had big dreams that I’m not living up to" tattooed on their foreheads. Don’t do that to them! This is why classic names are so excellent: There isn’t any particular type of person associated with the names Michael, Elizabeth, Christopher, or Laura.

This is one of the strangest things I’ve read on this website. I disagree 100%. I think the plump, "boring" girl in class might be more interesting or approachable if she had a name like Skye, instead of Elizabeth. And sometimes a persons personality reflects their name. If they have a unique name, then they might be more outgoing, but I imagine all the Katies to be shy.

Elizabeth is the Heroine in MANY novels, movies, and in history. You can’t tell me that is just a average name! I agree with Comment #1 also. Giving your child a unique, interisting name will make a HUGE impact on their personality, but only if the child has that drive. If their name stands out, the more that want to stand out! Another thing is you have no idea what your child is going to be like when he/she is born. You can’t predict if they’ll be class president or class clown. So giving you child a name thats new and exicting will naturally increase the childs want to have a personality to match. It has nothing to do with the parent pushing their child to be something he/she’s not!!! My Name is Katheryn but my nn is Katie, and I am EVERYTHING but shy!!!!!!!

So your point is "Don’t give your kid a pretty name, since they’ll probably be dumb and ugly."

What a lucky therapist your child will someday have...

The first sentence is the point of what was written, IMO -- stop predicting that your kid will be an Italian princess. Be reasonable. And the second sentence simply isn’t true.

What a sad post

I think it was wiser than many of you will ever know...at least until you have an epiphany that, oops, you named your serious, non-whimsical, studious kid something flaky and absurd and it really was a huge drag for her until she could get it changed.
