alice vs. alice vs. ?

My favorite book is Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. My arm is covered by a tattoo sleeve in Lewis Carroll art, my cat’s name is Dinah, and I have loads and loads of Alice memorabilia. I’ve always said that my first daughter would be named Alice. That being said, I am going through my first pregnancy and just found out it is with G/G twins. What do I do? Do I name the first born Alice and risk her twin feeling much less than special? Of course both daughter’s are equally precious and special to my husband Dave and I. Suggestions?

I wouldn’t do it. It may make the other girl feel left out. Are there any other characters from the book that you could name them after. Maybe save Alice for your next one.

Alice and...

Candace (means "queen mother," like the queen of hearts)
Carol
Caroline
Carolyn
Carroll

Or, is there something really precious to your husband that would provide another really special name?

I actually think Alice and Caroline would be really pretty... especially since Caroline is the feminine version of Charles, and Charles Lutwidge Dawson was Lewis Carroll’s given name.

Maybe have an Alice and Carrol? Carrol after the author?

I used to have a cat named Dinah, also named for Alice In Wonderland! I would name one twin Alice and the other something equally as special to your husband, you, or both of you. There are several names my husband and I have kicked around from favorite books, movies, songs, and vacation destinations (like where we honeymooned.) I think you guys could find a second really special name. GL!!

My husband’s favorite book is Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse 5 but where his is just a favorite novel, mine is a bit of a life obsession so it’s not really comparable.

I think your other daughter will be fine with her sister Alice’s name. Why not give her a good old fashioned name with it?

Alice and Margaret
Alice and Mary
Alice and Bridget
Alice and Caroline
Alice and Charlotte
Alice and Deborah
Alice and Elizabeth
Alice and Eliza
Alice and Elise
Alice and Frances
Alice and Genevieve
Alice and Harriet
Alice and Heidi
Alice and Isadora
Alice and Janet
Alice and Jane
Alice and Katherine/Catherine
Alice and Norah/Nora
Alice and Patricia
Alice and Pamela
Alice and Rachel
Alice and Sylvia
Alice and Thea/Theadora
Alice and Vivian
Alice and Victoria

like any?

It’s just like if she was the only girl and you named her Alice and then another sister came along years later. She wouldn’t feel less special I think.

I vote Alice and Caroline

I would name one Alice or you could use it as a mn so it not so obvious. (your obsession for Alice in Wonderland). Is there any other names in Alice in wonderland you love? A few others...
Mary Ann/Marianne
Lily (flower in the garden)
Violet
Rose
Daisy
Lorina (alice’s sister)
Lory
Lacie/Lacey
Tillie- Maybe you could use Matilda nn Tilly/Tillie
Do you like any that I listed to go with Alice?

I also think Alice and Caroline would be best if you can’t think of ANYTHING else to you guys that has meaning. I don’t think it has to be AS special as this Alice in Wonderland obsession though, just keep mum about how you always wanted to name your first daughter Alice, that will be hurtful to the other.

I feel that no matter what the second daughter’s name is, she will feel subpar. Afterall, her mother has tattoos and merchandise all focusing on her sister’s namesake! I wouldn’t use Alice. There are other Wonderland inspired names...

Mary Anne (the name the white rabbit calls Alice)

Carroll

Rose, Orchid, Daisy (all flowers mentioned in the garden that sing)

Kathryn (the first name of the voice of Alice in the Disney film)

I trust you have read about the inspiration for the books. There was a real Alice and she had two sisters Lorina and Edith.

Yes, I am very familiar with the history concerning the books inspiration. We like Lorina and Edith.
What do you think about these:

Edith Lily and Lorina Rose

I like the name of using Carroll to go with Alice. I would still use Alice for one of them but you should come up with something just as special for the other, maybe your mother’s name, or something that is secial to you and your husband.

I say proudly name one daughter Alice, and proudly name one daughter something else that is special to you, whether or not it’s connected to the book. I don’t believe your daughter will feel subpar because of her name not being Alice, particulary if she is named for a beloved grandparent, aunt, the month the girls are born, your favorite flower, the author or singer of "your song," etc.

I understand you don’t have any other "obsessions" per se, but I am confident you can find another precious name for your darling girl.

I think as long as you don’t obsess about or fuss over Alice more than her sister, then there is nothing wrong with naming one daughter Alice. :)

Edith Lily and Lorina Rose are lovely.

What about Alice Rose and Lorina Edith? Alice and Lorina would be lovely, as well.

I think that if you just CAN’T find something as special to you or your husband as Alice and Wonderland is to you, I would go with something else.

Is there a band your husband loves?
His favorite childhood story?
A relative he was particularly close with?
A place he loves?
Just some ideas.

Alright we are torn between these combos:

Lily Carroll and Lorina Rose
Edith Lily and Lorina Rose
Alice Rose and Carroll Daisy

I really like Alice Rose and Carroll Daisy. The name Carroll is just as important as Alice. Carroll is the author of the book and inspired your tattoos just as much as the character Alice, right?

I suggest u name 1 Alison which means little Alice then give the other the mn Alice??
posted by aw :: 14 years ago | report
John Tenniel actually did the illustrations my tattoos are based on. However, Carroll is obviously a very important namesake.

Alice Rose and Carroll Daisy are precious.

Don’t care for the name Edith
Lily Carroll and Lorina Alice would be pretty too
posted by guest :: 14 years ago | report
How about naming the other one Kathryn? Kathryn Beaumont was the little girl who was used to be the voice for Alice.

Why not give both of them the middle name Alice???????
