help! vs. meryl vs. bad?

Hello! My husband and I are expecting. We’re in LOVE with the name Meryl/Merrill, but are afraid our girl will get made fun of. Do you agree? Do you think it’s a bad name? If so, can you suggest names that are similar? I have a girl named Lia, who’s 3. So, please! Help! Thank you, Coralina, Ken and Lia.

Meryl is not bad. I like it. Makes me think of Meryl Streep. I also like Maren and Meredith.

It’s not bad, I just dot think it’s great. I love the name Sybill. I think it’s similar, but quirky and fun. I know one sybill and she constantly gets compliments on her name, everyone loves it!

I’m not a huge fan of Sybill, but thank you. I love Malia, but how would you pronounce it. I think Molly-ah, not Ma-lia. I think it’s too close to our other girls name, Lia. Thank you, though.

I know a girl named Merryl, and I think it’s a beautiful, unique name. I can’t see why anyone would make fun of it.

Meryl is better than many of the names some have suggested. It is fine. It reminds me of Meryl Streep and strikes me as a name that is used more in England than in the US/Canada.

I would spell it as Meryl. Merrill looks mascline to me.

You could use it as a middle name

I would think it will just make people think of Meryl Streep, which isn’t a bad thing. If she has any trouble with the name, she can always go by Mery.

Merrill, though occas. a male name, is more appropriate for girls. It is an English form of the Breton female name Muriel, meaning "bright Sea." Not sure about the origin of Meryl.
