Naomi vs. Nyomi vs. Nayomi

My husband and I really love the name "Naomi", but we are not too thrilled about what it spells backwards. Should we stick with the traditional spelling or go with a spelling variation? Thanks for your feedback. Also, any middle name suggestions would be greatly apprecitated.

I didn’t even notice the "I moan" until someone pointed it out to me a few months ago.

I would just stick with the traditional! I know a ton of girls with that name and I’ve never heard anyone mention the backwards spelling. If you are uncomfortable with it though, you can change the spelling up. Just keep the middle name classic and spelled properly. I’ve heard the name "nomi" before but Nyomi seems like the best alternative.

I personally think Naomi is the best spelling. Naomi is a fantastic name, unique and beautiful. However, I think Naomi is the least complicated spelling. Plus, Ive always been a stickler for traditional spellings. This way, her name will be in a souvenier shop on a magnet, etc. I also think that this is not much to worry about. I heard the Weird Al Yankovic song about palindromes and that is the only reason I found out about Naomi Imoan. I dont think youll find many kids pronouncing it backwards, and even if they do, Im not really sure if they will care how its spelled, because it sounds the same. If it helps, I actually knew a Naomi who knew this fact, and was excited about the fact that her name was a palindrome, forget the meaning of the words.

Personally, I’m not a fan of non traditional spellings for names. I think it only causes confusion. On behalf of your daughter, I think it would be annoying to always have to spell your name out for people. I think the backwards thing is a non-issue. Naomi all the way. Beautiful name.

Thanks guys for all of your comments and/or feedback. So far, the consensus is to stick with the traditional spelling which, I think we most like will. I like most of the middle name suggestions especially Naomi Zara.

I’m the poster who suggested Naomi Zara....i thought it sounded really cute too. Naomi Paige is cute...too much "y" sound though...nYomi paYge being the pronounciation. Naomi Megan has too much "m"

Hi, I’m called nayomie, for the first 14 years of my life it was spelt the tradional way of ’naomi’ but once it was pointed out to me of the backwards spelling of ’imoan’, I took it upon myself to change the spelling. Also as a child I hated my name, but over the years it has grown on me. The name na(y)omi(e)-grace, or na(y)omi(e)-ann(e) are nice names.

I love the name "Naomi" and would love to use it if I had another daughter. What would put me off using it is having to correct people’s pronunciation. In my head it’s "Nay-omee" but most people would call her "Neye-omi" which would just p*** me off. ;-P

My daughter’s name is Nyomi-Anne. her daddy only liked the name Naomi of all the names i had lined up. but he wanted it to be a ’y’ since it would go with his name Wyatt. i got her name changed from Nyomi Anne and just hyphenated it. personally not alot of people have mispronounced her name, which would [removed] me off if they called her Nye-omi if we kept it traditional.

People will always have an opinion. Spell Naomi however you like. I’m thinking about spelling our daughter’s name Naeomi. My best friends nickname is Nae for Janae. Naeomi Lynn

I like the spelling "Naomi" as my daughter’s name is spelled that way. Though, my fiance also named his little girl "Nahomy". We have just been blessed after all this time with a baby and if it’s a girl she will carry her middle after them. We are looking for a different way to spell it. I am leaning towards "Nayomi" or "Nyomi".
