Question! vs. Please Help!

I always wanted to use my maiden name (Collier) as a middle name if I ever had a son. I never really made this a widely known thing, and my sister has decided to do the same. She is due two months before me. Should I ask her if it is alright and express my prior wants, drop it, or use it too anyways?!?!? PLEASE HELP!!! THANKS! -Jen

Don’t expect her to drop it. If you don’t want to use it if she does, then don’t mention anything and drop it yourself (unless of course she gives birth first and doesn’t end up using it). If you’d be happy with the cousins sharing their middle names, then tell her immediately that you also are planning to use Collier. Not as a negotiating tactic, but as a pregnant sister bonding thing. Certainly avoid trying to stake any prior claim. It doesn’t matter who thought of it first, you’re both Colliers.

It happens to be both your and your sister’s maiden names, which you both own equally. It would be very meaningful to pass it down to your son. Since it poses no practical problem for cousins to have the same middle names, I don’t see any reason why you can’t both use it for your sons. It is passing along a representation of your side of the family to your sons. That’s very special. You might just want to let your sister know you plan to do that too.

i would ask her first, but i don’t see as she’d have any problem with it, if she does then you’ll have to find another middle name for your son
