Names Like vs. Archer?

After reading all the comments on our previous poll, my husband and I have decided to reconsider our son’s name. We are looking for a name similar to Archer. We have a list and will post it in the first comment, but we are still open to other suggestions. Last name Wells. Thankyou to all those who posted for your unwaveringly respectful and constructive advice!

Our list at the moment for names similar to Archer:

Thatcher
Granger
Jagger
Bauer
Vaughn
Sawyer

Please let us know your favourite and your least favourite name/s, as well as any other suggestions you may have. We are Australian, if that has any bearing. =)

Archer was my husband’s father’s name. He passed away shortly before we found out we were pregnant and will never see his first grandchild. We don’t want to use the actual name Archer, but rather something similar, so we can honour baby’s grandfather whilst giving our son room to forge his own identity.

Thank you!

I think I like Sawyer the best with your last name. If your last name were longer then I’d prefer Vaughn. (I don’t care for one syllable for first and last name, though the initials VW would be pretty fun.) Thatcher makes me think of Margaret Thatcher, which is a no-go for me but depending on your politics could be just right. Granger makes me think of grunge, Jagger seems sort of aggressive, like jagged broken glass, and Bauer is too "24" for me.

Thatcher and Sawyer are two of my most FAVORITE names ever! I am indifferent to Bauer and Vaughn but strongly dislike Jagger and Granger.
Brenner is like Jagger but has a nicer feel to me.I also LOVE the name Shepherd. It is alike in the sense that it is an occupational name. I think that Archer is nice name though!

Thanks! We REALLY like Shepherd. It goes on the list! =)

I think we may lose Jagger. Nobody polled - those on here and those we’ve asked in person - seems a fan.

I forgot to mention that baby’s middle name will be Luke or Jude.

Thanks!

I think Bennett Archer Wells would be a nice name. I know you wanted to get away from Archer but I like it so much more than the others!

Shepherd is kinda cool. I really like Thatcher as well. Sawyer is a good name but is a new up and coming name that I think is kind of trendy...and is being used on girls...At least here in the US.

How about
Bowman?
Bowman Wells
since Archer means bowman,i thought it could work, even Bowman Vaughn Wells has a nice ring. Here in the States, lots of people use Hunter, but I like Archer or Bowman better.

I like Archer very much.

Perhaps you could just use Arch nn Archie?
Or a name that would give you the nn Archie?

I guess I don’t really see using a name that is similar in style as much of a tribute...I mean, any tribute that requires more than a sentence of explanation is a little vague, right? Hope that doesn’t sound rude...I missed your poll earlier, so maybe you already explained all this.

I think Bowman is a neat suggest.

Or, I believe Orion is the archer constellation, right?

Orion would be a very cool name And a pretty cool tribute, if I do say so myself-lol.

Of those you’ve listed/mentioned, I love Shepard and Thatcher, and I like Sawyer.

Really, though-give Orion a whirl.

The reason we are not using Archer itself, for those who are wondering, is because the person we are naming our son after was very clear about not wanting that. He had a friend who had his grandson named after him and it riled Archer like you would not believe. He said that, in his opinion, to honour someone is fine, but to transplant a person’s name is to deny the child an identity of his own. We wanted to respect his opinion.

Personally, I was named after my great-grandmother and really like the connection it gives me to my past. But this isn’t about me so much as it is about my husband, his father and his son, and we will respect Archer’s wishes.

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I like Bowen better than Bowman. It is a Celtic/Welsh name and I think it would be great with either Jude or Luke. But, I must say that I LOVE Archer! It is one of my favorite boy names, but my hubby doesn’t like occupation names! :( Oh, and I have no boys anyway! lol

One other thought is to honor this person in a different way....as a Godparent, baptism sponsor, etc. etc.

What would he think of his name in the mn spot?

Surely that wouldn’t deprive him of his own identity.

One final idea I’ll toss out is March.
A bit off-beat, but sort of cool.

Thankyou last poster for the suggestion, but Archer passed away a few weeks before we found out we were pregnant. My husband is committed to naming our son in dedication.
