Would use it as a middle name. I would also Google "Taint" so you can get a better idea of what he will be called in middle school and high school and its meaning.

My friends son gets called Taint all the time! Sad...cause it is such a nice name.

If you want to use it, make it the first name.. Otherwise he’ll spend his whole life saying, "No, actually, I go by Tate." As far as the reference to Taint--any name can elicit teasing. I wouldn’t worry so much about that.
