Frustrated vs. Please vs. Help

Okay, I know this isn’t a baby name question, but I need some advice. I have a son who will be 3yrs old on August 30th. We have tried potty training off and on but with no luck. We decided this past weekend not to buy any more diapers because he is to the point where he tries to change his own if he is wet or dirty. The problem, though, is that he pees very often. I have only been home 45mins this afternoon, and he has already peed in 3pairs of underwear, once outside, and twice in the potty. Do you think 6 times in 45mins is abnormal? Should I have him checked or am I just overreacting? Sorry about this not being a name poll, but I am frustrated. If you wish not to comment, I understand. Thanks! ~Jennifer

I have no idea what to tell you but you could always go here

and go to the toddler group and either look around or make yourself a profile and ask yourself

All kids are different. When my kids turned 2 I potty-trained then all in one weekend. With the boys I made little "targets" with paper towels for them to aim at and read to them until they went #2. I set an oven timer for every hour for a potty break then let them pick a treat from a jar of crap I got from Dollar Tree. Worked like a charm. Basically did the same thing for my girls exceptt the targets. Put them in princess panties and told them they couldn’t go potty on a princess. And yes, I truly had all 4 of my kids potty trained in one weekend each.

Your son might have a bladder infection or a UTI, because of the frequency. You should really take him to a doctor.

I babysit a little girl who is constantly drinking from her sippy-cup and constantly peeing. If that’s the case with your son, he’s probably ok. If not he probably has an UTI

Thanks, poster 1 and 3. Poster 2--he pees in the potty like a pro. Has been for a long time. He knows what to do, but its like he has no concept of when he needs to go. Or he isn’t getting his bladder emptied. I have worked in daycare, and have his age group at church. I have noticed that the other little boys pee a lot at one time, but my little guy only goes a little bit. I wonder if that has something to do with it?

Poster 4--we have cut his drinks down to just with meals and snacks to see if that was it, but he still goes a lot.

If she’s just peeing a bit often he more than likely has an infection. Take him to his pediatrician as soon as you can.

I noticed my three year old doing the same thing- he seems to be able to stop in mid-stream... so I asked him during one of these times to " make a little more", and he did! Just to be safe, you van take him to the dr., tho... my oldest would not do number two on the potty, and had to go on stool softeners- little boys are tough!

Yup, just take him to the doctor.

I would recommend taking him to a doctor. When my younger sister was almost 3 she wasn’t potty trained either and my parents decided to take her to the doctor. Turns out she had kidney failure and had to have surgery. It’s not something to get scared about, but it is definitely something I would take seriously until you figure out what is going on. My two daughters were both potty-trained before they were 2, but I think that girls are different than boys and every child does it in his or her time.

Thanks everyone for taking time to give advice! I will probably call his doctor tomorrow, since they are already closed today. You have been very helpful. Thanks again! Kidney problems run on my husband’s side, and I hadn’t even thought about that, so I will probably get him checked, to be on the safe side.

Remember, that with little boys, the average potty training age (mastery) is between 3 years and 3 months, and 3 1/2 years! Hopefully everything is fine. I am potty training kiddo number two, who has a mind of his own, I tell you! He turned 3 in June. No more diapers here, and pull ups at nap and night, but sometimes we have fantastic days, and other times, not so much. He has not had a BM on the potty yet, though! :(

My niece refused to be potty-trained, and what finally worked was to just leave her bottomless during the day. Your work situation would definitely dictate whether or not this is an option, but it’d be worth trying if you can! My niece was also 3, and without the security of a diaper or panties or anything on her, she started to 1) recognize when she needed to go and 2) go in the toilet. I think she went on the floor a couple of times out of spite, but her mom made her help clean it up, so she cut that out pretty quickly.
