I heard someone suggest the nickname Ace for that name and I thought that was darling. I can totally see calling a little boy Ace!
You could also use Al or AJ. I think they’re all cool. Or you could use all three, depending on the mood. Why not? I go by Abbie, Abs, Ab, Abigail...

The Alistairs I’ve known were nn Ali (that was in Scotland)

Hmm. I dont remember seeing that name in the Twilight books anywhere... And I used to really like those! A couple years ago, then I realized how bad they are! (Sorry to those who like them!)
You must be reading the books more closely than me! I just know Alistair as a traditional Scottish name.
