Honestly, when I hear Layton/Laityn phonetically (by sound only), the first thing I think of is "boy." Just remember that sometimes people will hear the name before they see it, so the first association they have will influence their impression of (or surprise at) who possesses that name.

Layton is our last name! :) I like it for a boy; not so much for a girl. But it wouldn’t be bad or anything.
