What do vs. you think vs. of this name?
I really like the name ’Salem’ for my son. I know it will be associated with the witch trials, but I don’t think an event in history (no matter how notorious) should ruin a name. And I’d explain about his name to him once he got older so he would understand. What do you all think? What are some middle names? And if I used it as a middle name instead of a first name, would it be bad if I called him Salem around the house then his first name everywhere else? Thanks! -Mira

I like the name Salem. My little girl has a friend named Salem. I have heard it on both boys and girls. I think its a unique name. I would just name him Salem for his First Name and call him Salem. Trust me i have 2 kids and people will always have their oppinion about your kids name but as long as you love it then thats all that matters really. Congrats and goodluck.

Really?
So something like holocaust,Hiroshima...all of that is fair game?
I honestly don’t get the appeal, and I can’t imagine risking having your precious baby associated with such horror.
The Salem trials really weren’t about witches, of course, they were about the horrific torture deaths of innocent people accused of being witches.
I wouldn’t name my kid Charlie Manson either, but hey-each to his own.

Well, do you think that your son would enjoy that reference following for his whole life? You may love the name, which is fine. But he has to live with it even after he leaves the house.

I love it. I wouldn’t worry about the history behind it. Honestly i don’t think it would make a great second name but it would be lovely as a first name.
Salem Joel?
If you love this name go for it. Its your choice. GL!

It may have been a terrible thing that happened but originally Salem is Hebrew it means peaceful.

I don’t think anyone will think of any witch trials at all. The only thing that came to my mind was the capitol city of Oregon since that’s where I’m from. No one associates our capitol with witch trials. lol!

When i read to the name the first thing that popped into my mind was the witch trial’s or the cat on Sabrina the teen age witch.

I like the name. There are cities named Salem all over the US... they didn’t change their names. And I don’t think the witch trials are as well-known as the Holocaust or the bombing of Hiroshima. Plus, those aren’t names for a person so that was a silly analogy. It’s not something that is focused on in school.
Give him a more common mn in case he’d rather use than when he gets old enough to choose. Naming him Salem could also be to honor those who were persecuted back then.

So you’re practically saying that it’s ok to name your kid Holocaust, Depression, Colonial Times, Dark Ages and Midevil Times? No offense, but I wouldn’t name my child something like that. Sorry! GL!

I think people associating the name Salem with the holocost, the depression etc are just over reacting. No one here bats an eye when people here say they want to name their child Berlin or London or Britain or any other names that are also places. Every location name has SOME kind of bad history associated with it. It doesn’t ruin the name.
Salem is FAR better than the mykynlys and jazzzzmyns of the world.

You said yourself that you know the name will be associated with the Salem Witch Trials, which were not a positive part of our history. So, why are you really posting here? You had to know most people were going to tell you it’s a bad idea. And you are not going to have to be the one who deals with the consequences of having that name; your son is.

I think it’s a great name
so something bad happened in place called Salem, so what? There are bad things associated with pretty much any name out there. I mean Henry is a popular name but Henry VIII beheaded his wives *gasp* doesn’t make it a bad name. My child was born on Sept 11, doesn’t mean that her bday will forever be "cursed"
seriously people, you’re looking for bad connotations. It’s a just fine name

get a grip people. It’s not a bad name. lol how many people on here suggest the name Amelia on these polls? Anyone realize that’s a medical term meaning to be born without limbs? No. Because regardless of that, it’s still a nice name.
So is Salem
I say go for it!

I also think you should not name a child that. And the poster about Amelia. They are pronounced differently, so when I hear it I don’t think that!

The medical term amelia is pn uh-mel-ee-uh. Besides that, most laymen would not know it was a medical term. Most people, however, know about the Salem Witch Trials and what they stood for. Anyway, I don’t think any place names are good names for people. Naming a kid Salem or Brooklyn or London or Paris just sounds kind of trashy to me.

I had no idea what the Salem Witch Trials were, i only know now because of this poll! Never studied it or anything like that. It makes me think of the cat from Sabrina. But i quite like the name.
I think you should go for it.
To those comparing it to the Holocaust and other such events, what about the Berlin wall? All the slave trade still happening in India? You can’t JUST dislike Salem, if you’re judging on if something bad happened/still happens there, then you can’t like any place names.
