Emmett is not Irish. Its German.

Personally I like the ones that result in easier pronunciations (Declan over Deaglan) ...
My favorite that you listed is Desmond followed by Declan.

Declan, Finn, and Emmett are my favorites

Out of these, I would choose Cillian. I love Cillian, Cormac, Deaglan/Declan and Fionn/Finn and even though I prefer traditional spellings, I feel like Fionn will be mispronounced and spelled A LOT. Same with Deaglan.

Declan and Finn are more widely used and are part of that Irish trend that has been around for the past few years. I’ve never met anyone named Cillian and recently met a boy named Cormac. While I also love Cormac, I prefer Cillian (Cillian Murphy doesn’t hurt the image at all!)

I like with Seamus or Shamus

I like Declan the best.

FYI- Emmett is not Irish. It may be popular in Ireland due to that guy with the last name Emmett (I’m not good with history) but it is not of Irish/Celtic origin.

Emmett for Robert Emmett

Yes that’s the guy but its still not an Irish name. If you’re looking for an irish name or want a theme (irish names) for your kids choosing the name Emmett would be incorrect. I like the name a lot- don’t get me wrong- but its not Irish.

Thanks for the input! And as for Emmett - it may not be Gaeilc, but its definitely Irish now!

How is Cillian pronounced?

My mother is from Germany. Emmett is not Irish. Maybe you should choose a more traditional, american name if you don’t even know the origins of these "ethnic" "cultural" names you’re choosing from.

Emmet is a name given to Irish boys to honor Robert Emmet.

Favorite: Shane, Declan
Least Favorite: Deaglan, Emmett

I don’t like the others bullying you but that’s just silly. Just because you give a name to a child to honor someone doesn’t make that name a part of that culture, as in its suddenly Irish.

Cillian all the way. It’s handsome and strong and the original spelling isn’t easily mispronouced.

Lochlan isn’t Irish either but is considered a traditional Irish name, along with Emmet.

I don’t understand the bullying either :) My degree is in Irish History, so to the angry poster above, I’m a little confused.

What I meant is that there are many Irish names that are not of Celtic origin. Patrick was Latin, Sean is from Greek, Michael from Hebrew... all of these have become "Irish" names. And for the past couple hundred years, being so popularized by the poet and freedom fighter, so has the name Emmett.

Geez, its not even my favorite and I feel I have to defend it!

Your degree is in Irish History? That’s ridiculous. What a teeny, tiny narrow major.

Where’d you go for college- Made Up University?
posted by guest :: 13 years ago | report
Wow! So rude for no reason! I don’t understand...

My degree is in History: European, with an emphasis in Irish History. Thesis was done in Irish History.

Where did you learn your manners?

University of Chicago!

Well, thank you for your "input" University of Chicago!

A course or two on rhetoric would have helped you loads :) I hope you have a nicer day tomorrow, as today something is clearly bothering you.

Eimot is the Gaelic name of a river. The Saxon name is Emmet. It comes from eim, mning quick.

Now someone is just messing around- I will admit that I made the rude comment about Irish history but I did not write that university of chicago comment. Geez. Crazy tonight on here.

I love the names, definitely think it will benefit him to have an Anglicized spelling. Declan is my favorite, followed by Finn. Emmett great too, didn’t know it was Irish, but love it none the less. Other ideas: Eric, Kevin, Liam, Rory, Sean, Seamus. The more common Aidan, Conner, Patrick, and Ryan are still great options too.

Yes I DO love Aidan, but I fear its a little over-used at the moment. I know too many little Aidans now and their mommies will think I’m stealing their name :)

Rory is adorable, and its been taken over by little girls!

I think I agree with you - Declan and Finn are starting to feel right!

I like Finn. I know one little Finn and he’s really cute, and I can totally see the name growing with him.
