Repost about vs. low class vs. names!

Hi, I posted earlier, but just wanted some new persepectives and opinions. I was speaking to a coworker about our girl name list, and mentioned one of the names we liked was Destin, since we vacation in Destin, Florida every summer. She said it sounded trashy and low class and mentioned other low class names, in her opinion, Trinity, Destiny, and Harley. I had heard of "teen mom" names, but had never considered names to be trashy. So, is Destin indeed trashy( I know it is close to Desitin), and are there such things as trashy names? What do you consider trashy?

I don’t think it’s trashy! Your coworker is mean! I don’t consider any name trashy, even if its made up. Unless someone wants to name their kid like Ferrari or Mars or Comet, you know. GL!

No way! Destin is a beautiful name! And plus, it shouldn’t matter what your co-worker says! If you love the name, go for it! Its not trashy and I don’t think there are such things as "trashy" anyways. That was a rude thing to say. People wouldn’t confuse Destin to Desitin IMO. Destin isn’t a teen mom name. Destin is a beautiful city and you and your daughter would be proud to represent it.

Honestly, I think people are full of it when they say they have never considered that a name could be thought of as trashy. It’s like when people try to sound PC/colorblind and say that they would never associate any name with a race.. I mean, if you hear the name Jamaal, for example, you’re not going to picture a white kid with blue eyes.
There are definitely names that sound low class and make the parents look uneducated. A lot of people think of strippers when they hear names like Destiny, Trinity, etc.. To deny that people will have that reaction if you name your kid one of those names is silly, not PC. It is ignorant to pretend that associations do not exist (whether it is right for the associations to exist is not the point)
That said, I don’t think Destin sounds trashy. I actually think it’s cute and unique.

Thanks... she said it was not a racial thing, but an economic thing.... so are there other "trashy" names, in your opinions? What constitutes a low class name? Sounding like a stripper name?

Personally, I think names that sound stripperish are trashy (Bambi, Destiny, Chastity, Cherish)... also when you can tell that the mother worked really hard to make a name classy looks trashy.. I knew a girl who named her baby Mercedes but spelled it Mersadeez in an attempt to be creative and classing... what she really did was make a trashy name trashier!

I can’t think of any names in general, but misspellings DEFINITELY make names *look* trashy. Why spell Taylor like Teylhyr? It makes no sense. And there’s no point. Candi. I’d say that’s a pretty trashy name...even worse is Kandi. Hmmm, Barbie sounds pretty trashy. I think of trailer-dwellers when I hear both of those names and trailers are pretty trashy, imo!

I think Destin is pretty. And I definitely agree with some other comments, the only names I find trashy are the ones that would be used as a stippers name. Destin definitely isn’t trashy and you should have told your coworker off. It was rude to say that about a name you really liked.

Though if you have any concerns you could use it as a middle name?

Oh no, there are definitely trashy names out there. Any name that is tryndee or misspelled in order to look unique (Byntlee, Maicin, Teighlor) are trashy. Some names are inherently trashy-Trinity, Destiny, Nevaeh, Candy, Cherish.

Some names are nice, but when parents try too hard to make them unique or different it makes them look uneducated. Kimberly is a cute name, there’s no need to spell it Kymberleigh or Kimberlee. It’s guaranteed to make the kid’s life more difficult.

As for Destin, I personally hate it. It’s too close to Desitin, and I would be inclined to roll my eyes when I heard that name. That being said, it would be okay for a middle name where it wouldn’t be used frequently.

Destin is my favorite place in the country to be! I also want to name my future daughter Destin. So of course I don’t think it’s trashy. It has personal meaning to my husband and I. My only concern was that Destin was listed as more masculine and should it be spelled Destyn? I often see Destin listed as a boys name, but honestly it just sounds girly to me. I also get the "Desitin" closeness, but those of us who live in FL automatically think of Destin as the city and not the diaper cream. Personally I LOVE the name =)

I named my 4 daughters with DES and my 2 sons!
1) Destiny Rose 30 !
2) Desiree Nicole 30 !
3) Desmond Cole 25!
4) Destin Michelle 20!
5) Dessen James 18!
6) Desta Lynn 13!

My kids have never heard of their names being lower-class or trashy. Maybe it’s because they have such class, but if you like a name use it!! people told me Destiny would be a stripper, but she is a dentist and couldn’t be happier :) Don’t let ignorant people change your mind please!
