Nicknames for vs. James
We will be naming our son James (family tradition). We were thinking about calling him James, Jay, or J.J./JJ (periods or not?) Could there be any other nicknames besides Jim, Jimmy, and Jamie? Which would be your favorite? Thanks everyone!

I really dislike Jim and Jimmy. Jamie is kind of feminine. I like Jay a lot as a nn. I really just like James on its own though. It’s short enough that it does not need a nn. JJ is too cutesy.

I really like the nn Jimmy, Jim is ok but sounds like an older person. I agree that Jamie is more feminine, but I do know of quite a few boys named Jamie. Jay sounds like an older person as well. Calling him by first and middle initials is the best idea, if you don’t want to use Jim, Jimmy, or Jamie, and if you definitely want a nn for him. I also just like using the full name.

James is just fine on its own. Perhaps around the house while he’s little, you can use Jamie, its cute, but I wouldn’t recommend that he go by that in school or as an adult, except for with family. It is a bit too girly.
Jay is a nice nickname. My friend Jason goes by Jay all the time.
And JJ would also work. But I think it just depends on whatever happens naturally as he is growing up. He may decide that he wants to go by Jimmy. I had a teacher that would ONLY respond to Jimmy. Call him James and he’d freak out at you.
Ultimately, it will be his choice. You can call him anything you want though, it doesn’t have to be formally decided. I love the name James. Great choice! :D
