Baby Name Poll Results
What are vs. your first vs. impressions?
We are keeping the sex of our baby a surprise so have to narrow down a list of boy’s names and a list of girl’s names! With a lot of help from posters on this site we have chosen Nathan Richard for a boy and Tilly Katelyn for a girl with surname Morton. What are your first impressions when you hear the names Nathan Morton and Tilly Morton? Thanks ~ Tom and Emily

Nathan is nice. Not a big fan of Tilly at all. Too much of a nickname, and in my opinion, not even a good nickname. Did you have any other names for a girl that you still have in the runnings?

I’m not a big fan of Tilly. Lilly is better and Lilly Morton sounds pretty. I love the name Nathan but Nathan Morton is way too Rhymy! GL!

I did look at longer versions of the name Tilly but didn’t like any. I have found that in the UK (Where I’m from) nickname names are a lot more popular than they seem to be in the US. I do like Lily but I know of 3 Lilys who have been born in my town in the past year so it’s a bit too popular.
Thanks for your suggestion though :)

*other girl’s names we considered were Tamsin, Amber and Eliza but we didn’t really agree on any (I like Tamsin and Eliza, my husband liked Amber)

Well, see, I’m not sure how useful it is to ask for first impressions as most posters on here live in the U.S.
I believe you’re totally correct that nickname names are more common in the U.K.
In this country, if I heard the name Tilly, I’d be looking for a sort of interesting family...not "hippies," but artsy, and definitely a bit offbeat.
I’d expect a Tilly to have sort of a colorful/funky style.
Now, Katelyn really throws me for a loop, because it’s a very conventional, very popular name here.
I’m not really a fan of it with Tilly.
As for Nathan, I just find it fine-Don’t love it; don’t hate it-don’t really have any particular impression of it one way or the other.
I do always wonder when folks choose to use Nathan over Nate, because I find Nate so friendly and sporty that when parents go with the more formal Nathan all the time I do wonder why.
As for Tilly itself, I’d much prefer Mathilda with Tilly as the nn, but I do still like it quite a bit.
I also adore Eliza, but if your hubby doesn’t, well then that’s out, isn’t it?

Thanks a lot. I actually think we would use Nate most of the time anyway.
I really like how you describe the name Tilly - that’s the sort of person I imagine as well.
Katelyn is quite popular in the UK as well but I love it because it’s a combination of my sisters’ names.
And yes, unfortunately, Eliza is out..
Thanks for all the comments
