Since she is being born in September, how about the name September with a nickname of Ember or Emma? Or maybe Autumn. And I would rather get a dog for my birthday, but either is great! :)

I think for a 4 year old, a dog could hold up better with rough-play than a cat. And a larger breed dog, one that can play/wrestle with the kid too and not hurt it. (little dog nips kinda hurt more) I would suggest a lab or a golden retriever. They are more people orientated, and play for longer times. I don’t recommend small animals for children, and that includes cats and kittens. Although, cats and kittens are far easier for the parent to care for. Just make sure you take the dog to puppy kindergarten, so it can learn to socialize with other dogs and learn basic manners. For name suggestions, how about Ava, Danielle, or Katherine? Good luck!

I would rather get a dog than a cat... I like small but sturdy breeds around young children. My favorite is Miniature Schnauzer...
A dog is much higher maintenance than a cat, but there are more safety risks associated with cats and babies. Besides the risk of handling kitty litter while pregnant, cats carry germs that babies don’t have the immunity to handle. Sometimes cats also decide to warm themselves on babies causing suffocation.
As for dogs, be very careful about selecting the right breed for your family. Some dogs have temperaments that make them more suitable for families with young children.. some breeds are easier to potty train than others.. some breeds require a lot of grooming. Pay attention to the costs required for the breed.

For baby names, I think Ember and Autumn are cute suggestions from the first poster. Other names that would sound good with Christian: Julianna, Corinne, Annelise, Rebecca, Hailey, Jenna
