Yes, I think definatley Alec could be a nickname for Alistair, specially with the variation of Alexander.. best wishes

I love Alexander and Alistair. My husband wouldn’t let me name our secondborn Alistair because I kept calling him Alis. So, I named a cat and yeah, I still call him Alis :)
Alec would work, imo. I knew an Alphonso whose mother called him Ali (Like Mohammed Ali). That could also work.
