Indian vs. Girl vs. Name

M y husband and I are both Indian. I was born in the States and he was born in India but moved here when he was 6. We are expecting a little girl in Feb. We want her to have an Indian name, but we also want her to fit in here. These are our favourites - Asha, Indira, Rani and Leela. Which do you think is the best choice? Thank you.

Asha is beautiful. I also think Leela would work too.

I think Indira is stunning, Leela is cute and Rani is gorgeous. Asha is one I can’t warm up to, I’ve known several gorls with all these names and the Asha’s are always nasty and rude. Rani’s are sweet, polite and brilliant, Leela’s are the peppy happy cheerleader type and Indira’s are queenly and absolutely lovely women. Indira gets my vote, easily!

I love Leela. It sounds very pretty amd cute, yet fit for a grown woman. Asha is pretty, but with all the Ashton, Ashlyn, Ashley, etcs. she might get lost in the crowd. I don’t really care for Indira, but it has a nice sound. Rani is pretty, I would prefer it as a middle name hoever. What about Leela Rani?

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them, but I like Indira and Rani best.
Maybe you’ve already discarded these, but I also like:
Amara
Chandra
Mohini
Neela (my fav color)
Shanti
I also knew a Kavita and I am fond of that name too (but can likely not use it myself).
All very beautiful names...so hard to choose just one! ;)

It seems as if you and your husband would be the experts on your own question. Who better than you two to know a bunch of Indian names plus whether they would work in the U.S.? Your own ear will tell you. Plus, only you know what your community is like. If you live in, say, NYC, nobody will think anything of it if your child is named Indira. If you live in Armpit, Arkansas and are trying to blend in, then naming your kid Indira is like sending her to school with one of those pretty dots on her forehead and henna painted all over her hands. Hey, look at me, I’m Indian!
