Spell it Mya pronounced like My-a. If you spell it Maya, I would say may-a.

Maya is the traditional spelling and you are looking for the traditional pronunciation. When I see Maya I say my-uh. When I see the other spellings I start wondering if it’s a different name. Did you want Mia and replace the "i" with a "y" (Mya) and Maia just confuses me. Stick with Maya... GL!

Maya is pronounced May-a.

Maia is just weird, not sure how to pronounce that one. Me-a is spelled like Mia. I would spell May-a like Maya. And My-a like Mya. If you spell it like Mya, no one is going to mispronounce as may-a or me-a.

I would do Mia. But Mya has a much better chance of being pronounced properly.

I would prn all of them like My-uh. Maya looks prettiest to me.

Maya and Maia are both pronounced like My-ah.

Spell it Mya. It sounds just like it’s spelled- my-a. If you spell it Maya, people will pronounce it may-a and my-a. If you spell it Mia, people will say me-a.

I would have to disagree with most of the above posters. I would expect Maya or Maia to be pronounced correctly over Mya, and I also think they look more attractive. My personal favorite is Maia (maybe because I knew someone with that name once. I don’t think she ever had any troubles with pronunciation). Good luck!

Maya is the best spelling. People will see it and know it’s pr my-uh. Maia is also cute, but I prefer the traditonal spelling. Mya is ok, but would be the only one that be mispronounced (Mia).

I have never heard of anyone pronouncing Maya as May-uh, they have to be crazy! That is the traditional way and the prettiest in my opinion.

I agree that the only one that will be said wrong is Mya.

I am having the same exact issue, I am planning on spelling it Mya or Miya, no confusion that way! Goodluck.

Thanks everyone! There still seems to be some disagreement but its definately helped! We are leaning towards Maya (hopefully people will think of the Mayans and pronounce it that way).

Thanks!

Mya is adorable! It\’s unique, fun and looks better. Maya just looks too traditional and boring.

How about miya, I’m about to have another daughter and were stuck on the spelling. We want the my-a pronunciation and personality I think miya works

Mya is the best name! Maya looks like "mayo" and it’s boring and traditional. Mia would be pronounced wrong ALOT. Miyah should just be spelled "Mya" it’s more short and easy to spell. Mya is a unique name out of all of these names.

I vote Mya. That’s how you spell my friend’s name. It just seems right.

No one has ever went on vacation down to the May-an Riviera.

People take the traditional name Maya and spell it differently just to attain a false sense of hipster originality.

I named my daughter Maia Grace :)
I thought it would be obvious to people how to pronounce (example kai, sounds like my), although i constantly have people calling my daughter mia(me-ah) which drives me crazy, or insulting my choice of spelling for her name by saying its weird or not correct.
In my opinion maya is boring and traditional, and mya just doesnt look nice. I chose Maia because i have never met anyone with this spelling and it was more unique.

My niece’s name is Mya and people always call her Mia. Just spell it the "traditional" way and you’ll have less issues

Maya is the best way (that or Maia). People shouldn’t pronounce Maya wrong because it’s the actual way to spell the word (maya in Hindu and the Mayan people) and Mya would be pronounced as Me-ah.

My friend's name happens to be Maya and one of my other friends happens to be named Maja. They both get tired of hearing people pronounce their names wrong just because of the spelling. I don't care how it looks I think that people should just learn to understand that some names aren't just pronounced the way they look. To be honest when I look at a name I think to myself about how it would sound if I just said what I saw. Then I think of any name I know that is spelled in a similar way. Of course after I have said the name I ask the person if I said it right or not. Not to boast but I'm usually correct. I always get really annoyed for my friends when someone says their names wrong. I don't know why I just do. Frankly I don't understand how someone could pronounce Maya *May-ah*. It's kind of understandable how someone might say Maja wrong but it is still annoying. Maja is just the Polish way of spelling it. Some people should just try hard, I'm looking at you my dear old primary school teacher. Sorry to go on a rampage but the subject of mispronouncing names has always been my pet peeve.

My name is Maya (Ma-yah) but no matter how many times I correct this teacher of mine he never pronounces it the right way; just the way he reads it. I annoys me so much. All my other teachers have learnt my name by now. Also I have a friend who spells her name Mya but people Pronounce it *Me-Uh*. That's the way her name supposed to be said so that one could prove to be a bit confusing.

My name is Maya (pronounced May-a) and I constantly get people calling me Mya (my-a) but to be honest it's not much of a problem, it depends how much you (and she) would mind

I chose the spelling of Maya, based on me being born in Chile, Spanish speaking country. Mya in spanish is pronounced Mee-a. I can also see the spelling of Mya being correct as I was raised in Australia. I considered spelling it that way, since my wife is Sri Lankan she tells me that the Mya spelling has a meaning in Sinhalese. So my spelling choice is based on our heritage. Maya pronounced (maa) (ya). Whatever we choose we will love our babies.

Good advice to people out there: Never spell it Mia since people often mistake that spelling for Me-a. You can totally spell it that way just be prepared to correct people on how they say it or how they spell it.

As an adult, I changed my first name from Robyn to Maya. I had chosen the name Maya as a belly dance name, and I decided I wanted to make it my everyday name too. I pronounce it 'MY-ah' with the accent on the first syllable. It's occasionally mispronounced 'MAY-ah' but I never mind... I was born in the month of May, and I actually like that pronunciation of it too.

I have a hard time with so many of the comments. Pronunciations in language varies from country to country. For example...Maya does not exist in Italy. Why? the letter Y is not part of the alphabet. So Maia is the way to go. Americans have a tendency of putting the E sound as a E sound take Versace. Its not V-e-r-s-a-c-ee….its Versa chay..E has an ay sound in Italian and other latin origines. I purposely named my daughter Maia as every letter is pronounced as it sounds in my Italian origin. Ma I a. The I is pronounced as the letter E in English. I knew someone who was named Maya. She was teased and often called May yah?? Just my 2 cents.

oh yes. as for Mya or Mia.. that for me is pronounced M ee ah. Different name all together meaning MINE or belonging to me.

The name Maya is probably the most common way of writing the name. It is the name of the Mayan civilization and also the Sanskrit word for illusion or magic. The name Maia is the Greek way of spelling it. There is not a letter for y in Greek so they replaced it with an I. Maia was actually the mother of Hermes, the messenger god.
